Gizel Jiménez to star as Kate Monster in Avenue Q
Ms. Jiménez will debut in the long-running hit musical from August 27, 2018 at New World Stages.
Having recently celebrated its 15th Anniversary, producers of the Tony Award-winning "Best Musical" Avenue Q have announced that Drama Desk Award nominee Gizel Jiménez is set to join the off-Broadway cast, assuming the role of Kate Monster (and Lucy the Slut) from current cast member Dana Steingold on August 27, 2018.
Ms. Jiménez earned a Drama Desk nomination earlier this year for her performance as Olivia in the Public Theater's production of Miss You Like Hell and has also appeared in the Public's Party People and in the National Tour of West Side Story as Rosalia.
The current cast of Avenue Q includes Ben Durocher (as Princeton/Rod), Dana Steingold (as Kate Monster/Lucy the Slut), Nicholas Kohn (as Brian), Danielle K. Thomas (as Gary Coleman), Jason Jacoby (as Nicky/Trekkie Monster), Grace Choi (as Christmas Eve), and Maggie Lakis (as Mrs T. & others).
Avenue Q features music & lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, with a book by Jeff Whitty, and is directed by Jason Moore.
Synopsis: "Avenue Q is set in a rundown outer-borough neighbourhood, where the residents - both puppets and humans - deal with everyday New York challenges like getting a job, falling in love and discovering their purpose in life."
Avenue Q debuted off-Broadway, co-produced by The New Group and the Vineyard Theatre, in March 2003 and transferred to Broadway's Golden Theatre in July 2003. The show went on to win the 2004 Tony Awards for "Best Musical," "Best Score" (for Mr. Lopez and Mr. Marx), and "Best Book of a Musical" (for Mr. Whitty) and enjoy a Broadway run of more than 6 years, closing on September 13, 2009. The production moved to Off-Broadway's New World Stages on October 9, 2009, and officially opened on October 21.
The creative team features puppets conceived and designed by Rick Lyon, musical supervision by Stephen Oremus, choreography by Ken Roberson, scenic design by Anna Louizos, costume design by Mirena Rada, lighting design by Howell Binkley, and sound design by Acme Sound Partners.
The musical comedy is produced at New World Stages by Kevin McCollum, Robyn Goodman, Jeffrey Seller, The Vineyard Theatre and The New Group.
Avenue Q Tickets are available now for performances through to June 2, 2019.
