Galileo: full cast announced for Bertolt Brecht revival

 

 

Classic Stage Company (CSC) have announced the full cast for their new production of Bertolt Brecht's Galileo, translated by Charles Laughton, and directed by Brian Kulick, opening at CSC on 12 Feb 2012, following previews from 1 Feb 2012, and playing through to 11 Mar 2012.

 

 

As previously announced, Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham will star as Galileo, joined by Jon DeVries, Robert Dorfman, Aaron Himelstein, Andy Phelan, Amanda Quaid, Steve Rattazzi, Steven Skybell and Nick Westrate.

Galileo tells the story of Galileo's conflict with the Catholic Church over his scientific communities, and asks was he a coward who compromised his beliefs? or a wise man whoy knew when to speak and when to remain silent.

In Galileo Bracht explores the question of a scientist's social and ethical responsibility, as the brilliant scientist Galileo must choose between his life and his life's work when confronted with the Inquisition.

The creative team features scenic design is by Adrianne Lobel, lighting design by Justin Townsend, costume design by Oana Botez-Ban and original music and sound design by Christian Frederickson and Ryan Rumery.

Bios:

F. Murray Abraham won the 2011 Obie Award for Sustained Achievement. His many Off-Broadway credits include 'Offices,' 'Almost an Evening,' 'The Merchant of Venice,' 'The Jew of Malta' 'King Lear,' 'Waiting for Godot.' His Broadway credits include 'Mauritius' (2007), 'Triumph of Love' (1997), 'A Month in the Country' (1995). Abraham won an Academy award for Best Actor for his role as 'Antonio Salieri' in 'Amadeus.'

Brian Kulick (Director) is in his ninth year as Artistic Director of Classic Stage Company. Recent productions for CSC include Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' with Mandy Patinkin, Ostrovsky's 'The Forest' with Dianne Wiest and Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' and 'Richard III' with Michael Cumpsty. He commissioned and co-directed poet Anne Carson's award-winning 'An Oresteia,' which was comprised of her translations of Aeschylus' Agamemnon, Sophocles' Electra, and Euripides' Orestes. From 1996-2001 Mr. Kulick was an Artistic Associate at The Public Theater where he directed 'Twelfth Night,' 'The Winter's Tale' and 'Timon of Athens' at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park and also 'A Dybbuk,' 'Pericles' and 'Kit Marlowe' at The Public's downtown home.
