Fun Home to open at Broadway's Circle in the Square
It has been announced that the acclaimed 2013 off-Broadway musical Fun Home will open on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre on 22 April 2015, following previews from 4 April.
The musical, which features music by four-time Tony Award nominee Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by Tony Award nominee Lisa Kron, was originally produced by The Public Theater in October 2013, where it extended its limited run three times due to popular demand. It was named Best Musical by the New York Drama Critics Circle, and received the OBIE, Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics Circle and Off Broadway Alliance Awards in the 2013-2014 season. The show was also a finalist for the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
The original production received rave reviews, with many critics calling it the most exciting new musical in years: "Beautiful heartbreaker of a musical" (NY Times); "Achingly beautiful musical" (NY Daily News); "One of the best - and best-made - new musicals in years" (The Record).
Fun Home is based on Alison Bechdel's autobiographical, best-selling graphic novel. After her father dies unexpectedly, Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family's Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father's hidden desires.
The Broadway production will once again be directed by Sam Gold, with choreography by Danny Mefford, set and costume design by David Zinn, lighting design by Ben Stanton, sound design by Kai Harada and musical direction by Chris Fenwick.
The off-Broadway production starred Michael Cerveris (Bruce Bechdel), Roberta Colindrez (Joan), Noah Hinsdale (Christian Bechdel), Judy Kuhn (Helen), Sydney Lucas (Small Alison), Beth Malone (Alison), Joel Perez (Roy) and Alexandra Socha (Medium Alison). Casting for the Broadway production is yet to be announced.
