Butley: Nathan Lane to star in Simon Grayï¿½s comedy
Nathan Lane will return to Broadway in Simon Grayï¿½s play Butley for a limited run this fall. Directed by Nicholas Martin, the play will begin previews at the Booth Theatre on 5 Oct 2006 and open on 25 Oct 2006.
Nathan Lane starred in the production of Butley at The Huntington (Boston) in 2003, also directed by Nicholas Martin.
Butley is a dark comedy about a literary professor who loses his wife and lover in the same day. It was mounted on Broadway in 1972 and also made into a film, both starring Alan Bates.
Elizabeth I. McCann presents the Huntington Theatre Companyï¿½s production of the play. Additional producers will be announced.
The comedy will have design by Alexander Dodge, costumes by Ann Roth , lighting by David Weiner and sound by John Gromada.
Nathan Lane, currently starring as Oscar Madison in the Odd Couple, is the winner of two Tony Awards, for his performances in The Producers and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. He also starred on Broadway in Guys and Dolls, Love! Valour! Compassion! The Frogs, and Laughter on the 23rd Floor.
Nicholas Martin directed the Broadway production of Hedda Gabler starring Kate Burton. His off-Broadway credits include Fully Committed, Time of the Cuckoo and Bosoms and Neglect. He is the artistic director of Bostonï¿½s Huntington Theatre Company.
Simon Grayï¿½s plays include Otherwise Engaged, The Common Pursuit, Quartermaineï¿½s Terms, The Holy Terror and Wise Child.
