Bonnie & Clyde to close on 30 Dec 2011

The Broadway premiere of Bonnie & Clyde has posted early closing notices and will play its final performance on 30 Dec 2011, after 33 previews and 36 regular performances.

Bonnie & Clyde opened at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on 1 Dec 2011, following previews from 4 Nov 2011. The show had been selling tickets through to 9 Jun 2012.

The musical opened to below average reviews: I was bored (newyorktheatreguide); Modest, mildly tuneful (NY Times); Overly tame and unsurprising (NY Daily News); Arresting if problematic new musical (Variety).

Stuck in a dead-end job in Texas in the 1930s, young Bonnie Parker falls in love with Clyde Barrow, a charismatic criminal on the run from the law. Their love affair soon spirals out of control, as Bonnie & Clyde commit a series of bank robberies while staying one step ahead of the authorities. But as their notoriety — and body count — rises, the ill-fated lovers find themselves racing to the top of the Public Enemies list...with a bullet.

Written by the creative team of Frank Wildhorn (Score), Don Black (Lrics) and Ivan Menchell (Books), the musical's score combines rockabilly, blues and gospel music.

Directed by Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by John Shivers, the show stars Laura Osnes as 'Bonnie Parker' and Jeremy Jordan as 'Clyde Barrow,' along with Melissa van der Schyff as 'Blanche Barrow,' Claybourne Elder as 'Buck Barrow,' Joe Hart as 'Sheriff Schmid' and Louis Hobson as 'Ted Hinton'.

The cast also features Leslie Becker, Mimi Bessette, Alison Cimmet, Daniel Cooney, Jon Fletcher, Victor Hernandez, Sean Jenness, Katie Klaus, Michael Lanning, Garrett Long, Matt Lutz, Marissa McGowan, Cassie Okenka, Justin Matthew Sargent and Tad Wilson.

Laura Osnes (Bonnie Parker), Melissa van der Schyff (Blanche Barrow) and Claybourne Elder (Buck Barrow) originated their roles when Bonnie & Clyde had its world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse in the fall of 2009 (Best Musical, San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Award). They reprised their roles in the fall of 2010 when the show ran at the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota, Florida. Both productions where helmed by Jeff Calhoun.

The musical is produced on Broadway by Kathleen Raitt, Barry Satchwell Smith, Jerry Frankel, Jeffrey Richards and Michael Jenkins.
