Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson plays final performance

The Broadway premiere of the rock musical Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson plays its final performance on 2 Jan 2011, after playing 26 previews and 94 regular performances.

The show opened at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on 13 Oct 2010, following previews from 9 Oct 2010; the musical had been on sale through to 9 Apr 2011.

The musical opened on Broadway to mostly excellent reviews: A lot has changed since this musical opened at the Public Theatre last spring. And this show has changed along with the times, but not so much that it lost its punch (newyprktheatreguide.com); Smarter and cruder than your average Broadway fare (NY Times); Lightweight, fresh and fun (NY Daily News); A wildly entertaining ride (Record); Soars along like a carnival ride (Variety).

Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson is a sharp, irreverent look at America's seventh president, Andrew Jackson—the man who invented the Democratic Party, doubled the size of our nation and signed the Indian Removal Acts that started the Trail of Tears — to investigate the attraction and terrors of American populism.

A co-production with Center Theatre Group and in association with Les Freres Corbusier, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson is written and directed by Alex Timbers and features music and lyrics by Michael Friedman. Friedman's score was honored with an L.A. Critics' Award for the musical's world premiere at Center Theatre Group.

The musical opened on Broadway following a sold-out run at Public LAB in 2009, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson returned to The Public for a full main stage production and opened to acclaimed reviews on 6 Apr 2010. It received an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical and a Drama Desk Award for Best Book of a Musical. When the show closed on 27 Jun 2010, after three extensions, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson was the second highest grossing show in The Public Theater's downtown history.

The show stars Benjamin Walker (Andrew Jackson), James Barry (Male Soloist), Greg Hildreth (Red Eagle), Jeff Hiller (Adams), Lucas Near-Verbrugghe (Van Buren), Kristine Nielsen (Storyteller), Cameron Ocasio (Lyncoya), Maria Elena Ramirez (Rachel), Kate Cullen Roberts (Elizabeth), Ben Steinfeld (Monroe) and Emily Young (Female Soloist).

The design team for Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson features scenic design by Donyale Werle, costume design by Emily Rebholz, lighting design by Justin Townsend, sound design by Bart Fasbender and choreography by Danny Mefford.

The musical is being presented on Broadway by The Public Theater, Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel, Scott M. Delman, Stewart F. Lane, Bonnie Comely and Susan Gallin/Mary Lu Roffe.
