An Enemy of the People: MTC announces cast



The full cast for Manhattan Theatre Club's upcoming Broadway production of a new version of Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People, adapted by Rebecca Lenkiewicz and directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes.

Joining four-time Tony Award winner Boyd Gaines as 'Dr. Thomas Stockmann' and Emmy Award winner Richard Thomas as 'Mayor Peter Stockmann' will be Maïté Alina (Broadway debut) as 'Petra Stockmann,' Gerry Bamman (The Merchant of Venice) as 'Aslaksen,' Kathleen McNenny (Death of a Salesman) as 'Catherine Stockmann,' Randall Newsome (Inherit The Wind) as 'Horster,' John Procaccino (Blood and Gifts) as 'Hovstad,' Michael Siberry (Mrs. Warren's Profession) as 'Morton Kiil' and James Waterston (Parents Evening) as 'Billing.'

An Enemy of the People opens at MTC's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on 27 Sep 2012, following previews from 4 Sep 2012, and will run through to 11 Nov 2012.

When Dr. Thomas Stockmann (Boyd Gaines) discovers toxic contamination in the water used at the local baths, he expects to be hailed as a hero. But since the baths are the town's main source of revenue, the community fights to silence him... and Dr. Stockmann learns that there are forces more powerful than truth.

The creative team for An Enemy of the People includes set design by John Lee Beatty, costumes by Catherine Zuber, lighting by Ben Stanton and sound by David Van Tieghem.

Bios:

Boyd Gaines (Dr. Thomas Stockmann) most recently starred opposite John Lithgow in the Broadway production of The Columnist. Boyd Gaines (Dr. Thomas Stockmann) is a four-time Tony Awards winner: 'Gypsy (2008),' 'Contact' (2000), 'She Loves Me' (1994) and 'The Heidi Chronicles' (1989). In addition, he appeared in the Broadway productions of 'Driving Miss Daisy,' 'Journey's End' and 'Twelve Angry Men.' Off-Broadway he has starred in 'Bach at Leipzig,' 'Major Barbara,' 'The Comedy of Errors' and 'A Month in the Country.'

Richard Thomas (Peter Stockmann) made his Broadway debut over 50 years ago, and has since appeared on the New York stage many times in productions such as 'Race,' 'Strange Interlude,' 'Fifth of July,' 'Democracy,' 'A Naked Girl on the Appian Way' and most recently in 'Timon of Athens' at the Public Theater. He has worked extensively in film and television in projects that include "Wonder Boys," "Taking Woodstock" and "The Waltons," for which he received an Emmy Award. Maïté Alina (Petra Stockmann) is making her Broadway debut. Regional credits include 'Esperanza Rising,' 'Cephalopod,' 'Marisol,' 'A Room Embodied,' 'Reckless,' and 'Flesh and Blood.' Television credits include "The Good Wife" and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."

Gerry Bamman (Aslaksen) last starred on Broadway as 'Duke of Venice' in 'The MErchant of Venice.' His recent works include 'Nixon' in 'Nixon's Nixon' (Obie), 'The Glass Cage,' 'Bartleby the Scrivener,' 'Encounter at Vallodilid,' 'Lowell Limpet,' 'Shakespeare,' 'Moses,' 'Joe Papp' and 'Mrs. Farnsworth.' His film credits include "Runaway Jury," "Two Family House," "Passion of Mind," "Home Alone 1 and 2," "Lorenzo's Oil," "Secret of My Success," "Bodyguard," "True Believer" and "Pink Cadillac."

Kathleen McNenny (Catherine Stockmann) was most recently seen on Broadway in Mike Nichols' production of 'Death of a Salesman.' Other Broadway cresits include 'Coram Boy,' 'The Constant Wife' and 'After the Fall.' Off-Broadway: 'Gates of Gold,' 'Mind Game,' 'Three Travelers,' 'Comedy of Errors,' 'Twelfth Night' and 'The Winter's Tale.

Randall Newsome (Horster). Broadway: 'Inherit the Wind' and 'A Touch of the Poet.' Off-Broadway: 'The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.'

John Procaccino (Hovstad). Broadway: 'Art,' 'An American Daughter,' 'A Thousand Clowns' and 'Conversations with My Father.' National tour: 'The Light in the Piazza.' Off-Broadway: 'Blood and Gifts' and 'Coming of Age in Soho.'

Michael Siberry (Morton Kiil) last starred on Broadway in 'Man and Boy.' Other Broadway credits include: 'Mrs. Warren's Profession,' 'Spamalot,' 'The Frogs,' 'The Sound Of Music,' 'The Merchant of Venice' and 'The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.' Off-Broadway: 'Death Takes a Holiday' and 'When the Rain Stops Falling.' TV: "Rosemary and Thyme"; "The Grand"; "Silent Witness" (BBC) and"Jeeves and Wooster."

James Waterston (Billing) is making his Broadway debut. Off-Broadway: 'Buffalo Gal,' 'As You Like It' and 'Another Time.'

Doug Hughes (Director). Previous Manhattan Theatre Club productions include 'The Whipping Man,' the Tony nominated revival of 'The Royal Family,'' Mauritius,' 'An Experiment with an Air Pump,' 'Defiance' and 'Doubt,' for which he won the Tony Award for Best Director. Other recent Broadway productions include 'Born Yesterday,' 'Elling,' 'Mrs. Warren's Profession,' 'Oleanna,' 'A Man for All Seasons,' the Tony nominated revival of 'Inherit the Wind,' 'A Touch of the Poet' and 'Frozen.' Following 'An Enemy of the People' he will direct the upcoming Broadway revival of 'The Big Knife.'

Henrik Ibsen (Playwright; 1828-1906). In addition to 'An Enemy of the People,' his plays include 'Hedda Gabler,' 'A Doll's House,' 'Ghosts,' 'The Lady From the Sea,' 'Peer Gynt,' 'Pillars of Society,' 'The Wild Duck,' 'Rosmersholm,' 'Master Builder,' 'Little Eyolf,' 'John Gabriel Borkman' and 'When We Dead Awaken.'

Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Adaptation). Lenkiewicz's plays include 'The Night Season,' 'Soho - A Tale of Table Dancer's,' 'Shoreditch Madonna,' 'Blue Moon Over Poplar,' 'The Soldier's Tale,' 'Faeries,' 'Her Naked Skin,' 'The Lioness,' 'The Typist,' 'Stars Over Kabul,' 'That Almost Unnameable Lust' and 'The Painter.
