Beetlejuice may be stuck in the same house for eternity, but the *Beetlejuice* musical has traveled far. Before coming to Broadway, the show premiered at Washington, D.C.'s National Theatre. The whole cast from that production, led by Brightman, transferred with *Beetlejuice* to New York in April 2019, where it ran for just under a year. Set to close in June 2020, *Beetlejuice* ended up closing early, in March 2020, amid the pandemic.

While Broadway was shut down, though, the *Beetlejuice* cast and creative team took to social media to keep promoting the show, holding multiple virtual events — costume contests, virtual stagedoors, and more. The fan response was so overwhelming that *Beetlejuice* came back in April 2022. *The Music Man* had moved into its old venue, the Winter Garden Theatre, so *Beetlejuice* is now at the Marquis Theatre, with all its spectacular sets and effects intact (yes, including the massive sandworm). Many original cast members returned with the show, including Brightman, Kerry Butler as Barbara Maitland, and Leslie Kritzer as Delia Schlimmer.

*Beetlejuice*'s first NYC run marked the Broadway debuts of Scott Brown and Anthony King. Neither are new to theatre, though: Brown is a former theatre critic for New York magazine, and King is the former artistic director of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. Their *Beetlejuice* collaborator, composer/lyricist Eddie Perfect, had just debuted on Broadway with *King Kong* in November 2018, making *Beetlejuice* his second show in one Broadway season.

Perfect began writing songs for *Beetlejuice* in 2014, and a companion album to the show's cast recording, *Beetlejuice: The Demos The Demos The Demos*, features a ton of songs that didn't make it into the final cut of *Beetlejuice* on Broadway. Alex Timbers, who also helmed the Tony-winning Best Musical *Moulin Rouge! The Musical*, has also been attached to *Beetlejuice* since the beginning, for more than 10 years.

## What to Watch For

- The *Beetlejuice* set contains homages to Tim Burton. The gravestones in the opening scene all bear the names of other Burton film characters, and they sit on hills sculpted to resemble the Claymation animation style of *The Nightmare Before Christmas*.
- *Beetlejuice* also contains references to Golden Age Broadway musicals like *Hello, Dolly!* and *Brigadoon*. Keep your ear out for them!
- Brightman, and the other actors that play *Beetlejuice*, use a special vocal technique called ventricular fold phonation. It lets them sing and speak in the character's gravelly voice for long periods of time without damaging their vocal cords.
- The title character’s name is actually spelled Betelgeuse after the star in the Orion constellation, but for advertising purposes for the original film, *Beetlejuice* was spelled phonetically.
- The *Beetlejuice* musical gained lots of its fans by going viral on social media. It all started when the cast posted videos from backstage, doing trendy TikTok dances in costume.
- Multiple stars of the original *Beetlejuice* movie have come to see the show, including Geena Davis (who played Barbara) and Catherine O'Hara (who played Delia). They both loved it!

Based on the cult classic 1988 film by Tim Burton, *Beetlejuice* has finally been unearthed for the Broadway stage. The *Beetlejuice* musical features a book by Scott Brown and Emmy Award nominee Anthony King, and an original score by Australian singer-songwriter Eddie Perfect. The show even throws in a couple of signature tunes from the original movie for good measure: “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” and “Jump in the Line (Shake, Señora),” both made famous by Jamaican American icon Harry Belafonte.

Under the direction of two-time Tony Award nominee Alex Timbers, *Beetlejuice* promises more ghoulish fun and frights than you could possibly imagine (and the biggest sandworm Broadway has ever seen). The scenic design by David Korins is a stunningly macabre tribute to Burton himself, and the production overflows with special effects by Jeremy Chernick and illusions by Michael Weber that are as jaw-dropping as they are heart-stopping.

In the *Beetlejuice* Broadway production, Tony nominee Alex Brightman brings the ghost with the most “to life” eight times a week, stepping into the shoes (and black-and-white-striped suit) of Michael Keaton, who created Beetlejuice on the silver screen alongside co-stars Winona Ryder, Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Jeffrey Jones, and Catherine O’Hara. The 1988 movie established Tim Burton as the Master of Macabre and the leader of the gothic fantasy genre. The *Beetlejuice* Broadway musical stays loyal to the source material’s tone and is a gift for Burton fans across the world, with multiple homages to his films.    

*Beetlejuice* is produced by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures and Langley Park Productions, whose previous Broadway credits include *Charlie and the Chocolate Factory*, *Misery*, *The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time*, and *Elf*, among others. The world premiere pre-Broadway engagement of *Beetlejuice* was staged at the National Theatre in Washington D.C. from October 14 to November 18, 2018. The first performances of *Beetlejuice* in New York began in March 2019, and the show got eight Tony nominations, including Best Musical.

The Broadway musical has long come back from the dead — the 1980s doldrums in which the vacuum was filled by British imports, starting with <a href="/show/cats">Cats</a> which ran for nearly 18 years at the <a href="/theatres/winter-garden-theatre">Winter Garden Theatre</a>. But for Broadway's latest behemoth, the stage of the same theatre is now joyfully populated with the living dead.This is not the first time that this theatre has had a haunting: the original production of Sondheim and Goldman's Follies here in 1971 was full of ghosts of its characters' younger selves; it may well be one of the most articulate and moving musicals ever written about the reflective pains of growing older, and realising the mistakes you've made along the way.Of course <a href="/show/beetlejuice">Beetlejuice</a> doesn't detain itself with anything quite so serious or searching.&nbsp;But just as Cats dealt with an imminent afterlife, as it revolved around which of them would ascend to the 'heaviside layer', so Beetlejuice is about how mortality may not quite be the end but the start of another adventure.Here suburban couple Adam and Barbara (played with gentle unassertiveness by the charming coupling of Rob McClure and Kerry Butler) find themselves having a literal&nbsp;out-of-body experience when they suddenly fall through the floorboards of their home -- and realise that they have, in fact, died. Alexander Michael&nbsp;Brightman was born on&nbsp;February 5, 1987&nbsp;in Santa Clara, California, and is a Tony-nominated actor, known for originating the role&nbsp;of Dewey Finn in&nbsp;[School of Rock -&nbsp;The Musical](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/school-of-rock-the-musical)&nbsp;and the titular role in the musical adaptation of&nbsp;[Beetlejuice](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/beetlejuice).

He attended the all-male Jesuit high school Bellarmine College Preparatory in&nbsp;San Jose, California,&nbsp;where he&nbsp;graduated in 2005. His career on the Broadway stage initially got off to a false start, as he was cast as an understudy in the ill-fated 2008 production of&nbsp;Glory Days, which only played a total of 17 previews and closed after its first regular performance at the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/circle-in-the-square-theatre">Circle in the Square Theatre</a>. Following the pre-Broadway world premiere engagement at Washington, D.C.'s National Theatre in the fall of 2018, Brightman returned&nbsp;to the Broadway stage in another Tim Burton musical adaptation,&nbsp;starring&nbsp;in&nbsp;Beetlejuice&nbsp;at the Winter Garden Theatre from March 28, 2019. The production had posted a closure notice for June 6, 2020, but was then forced to close prematurely on March 11, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The production, however, announced a reopening&nbsp;in spring 2022.

Designed by John C. Portman, Jr., the Marquis Theatre is situated on the third floor of the Marriott Marquis Hotel.

The construction of the hotel resulted in the demolition of the original Helen Hayes Theatre, the Morosco Theatre, the Bijou Theatre, and remnants of the Astor Theatre and the Gaiety Theatre. However, the construction permit was only issued by New York City officials if Portman agreed to include a theatre within the building. The Marquis Theatre opened on July 9, 1986 with a series of concerts by Shirley Bassey.

## How to get to the Marquis Theatre on Broadway

The Marquis Theatre is closest to the 42nd Street - Times Square subway stop on the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W, and S lines. The 50th Street station on the 1 line and the 49th Street station on the N, R, and W lines are also nearby; all are about four blocks from the theatre on 46th Street.

The nearest bus stop is 8th Ave/W 46th St. on the M20 and M104 lines.
