Adrienne Warren will star as Tina Turner on Broadway
Tony Award nominee Adrienne Warren will reprise her West End role on the Great White Way in fall 2019.
It's official! Tony Award nominee and West End star Adrienne Warren will reprise her current London performance as Tina Turner in the Broadway premiere of the smash hit bio-musical Tina: The Tina Turner Musical this fall.
On the Broadway casting news, Tina Turner commented: "I'm so proud of everything that Adrienne has achieved over the last year in the West End. She has given it everything she's got, she has poured her soul into it, and she deserves every success. I am thrilled she will be reprising her role in New York, and I cannot wait to see her on that Broadway stage on Opening Night".
Ms. Warren also released the following statement: "Working on this show has been a life-changing experience for me. Tina's unshakable courage, grace and determination have been our constant inspiration, and I am honored to have had the opportunity to be part of this telling of her story. It has been an amazing year in London, working with the incredible Phyllida Lloyd, Katori Hall and the creative team, in a city that has welcomed me with open arms. Returning home to Broadway, in this role and in this show, is a dream come true".
Adrienne Warren starred as Lorrell Robinson in the 2009 National Tour of Dreamgirls, before taking on the role of Danielle in the 2011 National Tour of Bring It On The Musical, reprising the role (and making her Broadway debut) in the Broadway premiere in 2012. Her big break came after being cast in Shuffle Along, Or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed and earning a Tony Award nomination for her performance in 2016.
Ms. Warren recently took part in our first "5 Questions from Over the Pond" feature with Summer: The Donna Summer Musical star and Tony Award nominee Ariana DeBose... Check out Adrienne's answers here.
Written by Katori Hall (with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins), who previously made her Broadway debut with The Mountaintop in 2011, and directed by Tony Award nominee Phyllida Lloyd, whose previous Broadway credits include Mamma Mia! and 2009's Mary Stuart, Tina features some of Tina Turner's iconic back catelogue of hits such as "Nutbush City Limits," "River Deep - Mountain High," "Proud Mary," "Private Dancer," "What's Love Got to Do with It?," "Simply The Best," and many more.
Synopsis: "From humble beginnings in Nutbush, Tennessee, to her transformation into the global Queen of Rock 'n' Roll, Tina Turner didn't just break the rules, she rewrote them. This new stage musical, presented in association with Tina Turner herself, reveals the untold story of a woman who dared to defy the bounds of her age, gender and race."
The production features musical supervision, additional music and arrangements by Nicholas Skilbeck, orchestrations by Ethan Popp, choreography by Anthony van Laast, scenic & costume design by Mark Thompson, lighting design by Bruno Poet, sound design by Nevin Steinberg, and projection design by Jeff Sugg.
Tina is scheduled to open at a yet-to-be-named theatre in the fall of 2019.
Tickets for the Broadway premiere will be going on sale at a later date, but in the meantime, check out our 4* review of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical on our London Theatre Guide sister site.
