The central character of the show is Usher, a Black, gay man who works a day job as a Broadway usher while writing a musical about a Black, gay man writing a musical. Surrounding him are an ensemble of six Thoughts, who represent his self-doubtful thoughts, as well as people from his life, that he must battle to succeed.
A Strange Loop won the Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical in 2022; it was nominated for nine additional Tonys. The show premiered off Broadway in 2019 and, in 2020, won the Pulitzer Prize, making it only the 10th musical in history to do so.
