They're closing the loop. Michael R. Jackson's multi-award-winning musical A Strange Loop will end its Broadway run in 2023. The show will close at the Lyceum Theatre on January 15, at which time it will have played 314 total Broadway performances.

A Strange Loop is an original musical loosely based on the life of its creator. The main character, Usher, is a Black, queer man writing a musical about a Black, queer man writing a musical. While working a day job he hates and battling constant self-deprecating thoughts (personified by a raucous ensemble), Usher works to succeed professionally and personally in a harsh world.

The musical's Broadway premiere was two decades in the making; the show began as a monologue Jackson wrote in grad school. The full-fledged production premiered off Broadway in 2019 to rave reviews. The show won Best Musical at the New York Drama Critics’ Circle, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Drama League, and Off-Broadway Alliance Awards. The show also became the first musical by a Black writer, and 10th musical ever, to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

A Strange Loop's Broadway premiere also received acclaim. New York Theatre Guide's five-star review reads, "I've witnessed and studied the innovations in [Show Boat, Oklahoma!, Company, Rent, or Hamilton, but] none of them are as revolutionary as what Michael R. Jackson has accomplished with his Pulitzer Prize-winning musical." A Strange Loop received 11 Tony Award nominations, the most of any show in 2022, and earned Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical.

Three cast members — Jaquel Spivey as Usher, L Morgan Lee as Thought 1, and John-Andrew Morrison as Thought 4 — also received Tony nominations. The A Strange Loop cast also includes Jason Veasey, Antwayn Hopper, John-Michael Lyles, and James Jackson, Jr. All but Spivey have been with the show since its first Off-Broadway performances.

A Strange Loop is directed by Tony nominee Stephen Brackett and choreographed by Raja Feather Kelly.

On March 15, exactly two months after A Strange Loop closes, Second Stage Theater and Vineyard Theatre will present a new musical by Jackson, White Girl in Danger, off Broadway at the Tony Kiser Theater.
