2ST presents world premiere of Cardinal by Greg Pierce
Second Stage Theater has added the world premiere of Greg Pierce's new play Cardinal, directed by Kate Whoriskey, which is expected to begin performances at the Tony Kiser Theater in January 2018.
Synopsis: "Paint it red. So begins Lydia's wild idea to invigorate her Rust Belt town. But when a whip-smart entrepreneur co-opts her scheme, a precarious rivalry is born. A battle for the town's soul ensues, causing its obsessive mayor, its defiant matriarch, and the rest of its residents to question who they are and where they're headed."
Greg Pierce was last represented off-Broadway by 'Kid Victory' at the Vineyard Theatre earlier this year. Other off-Broadway credits include the LCT3 productions of 'Her Requiem' (2016) and 'Slowgirl' (2012) and the Vineyard Theatre's 'The Landing' (2013).
Casting and additional creative team information for Cardinal will be announced at a later date.
As previously announced, Second Stage Theater will also mount the 35th Anniversary production of Harvey Fierstein's Torch Song, directed by Moisés Kaufman and starring Michael Urie and Mercedes Ruehl, which is set to begin performances at the Tony Kiser Theater in September 2017. 2ST also presents the New York premiere of Tracy Letts' Mary Page Marlowe, directed by Lila Neugebauer, at the Tony Kiser from June 2018. The current production at the off-Broadway venue is Bruce Norris' comedy A Parallelogram, directed by Michael Greif, which continues through to August 20, with an official opening set for August 2, 2017.
On Broadway at The Hayes Theater, 2ST presents Kenneth Lonergan's Lobby Hero, starring Chris Evans and Michael Cera, from March 2018, as well as the Broadway premiere of Young Jean Lee's Straight White Men, directed by Anna D. Shapiro, from July 2018.
