2006 Tony Award winners



The 2006 Tony Award winners were presented this evening (Sunday 11 Jun 2006) at a ceremony hosted at Radio City Music Hall.

Alan Bennet's The History Boys was named Best Play and won a total of six, of the seven awards it was nominated for, making it the most decorated production of the 2005 - 2006 Broadway season.

The covated Best Musical Award went to The Jersey Boys, however it was The Drowsy Chaperone which walked away with the most awards for a musical, having won five Tony's.

Richard Griffiths, a well loved British star, making his Broadway debut, was named Best Leading Actor in a Play (History Boys) for his performance as Hector, a maverick school teacher at odds with his head teacher and an upstart younger supply teacher.

Best Revival of a play went to the Lincoln Center's production of Awake and Sing!, and Best Revival of a Musical was presented to the Roundabout Theatre's production of The Pajama Game.

The Color Purple which had been nominated for 11 awards gained just one, Best Leading Actress in a Musical, which was won by La Chanze.

The Regional Theatre Tony Award will be presented to Intiman Theatre, in Seattle, WA.

The Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre will this year be presented to Harold Prince.

The Tony Award Administration Committee have voted to present a Special Tony Award to Sarah Jones, writer and star of the Broadway one-woman show Bridge and Tunnel.
