UPDATE: This production has been postponed indefinitely.

The long-running comedy The Essence has played to success at the New York International Fringe Festival as well as throughout the northeastern United States and Europe for more than 10 years. Now, it will have its Off-Broadway premiere this fall at WP Theater. Performances begin October 10 ahead of an October 17 opening night, and the run will go for 10 weeks until December 23.

The Essence is a collection of scenes, sketches, and songs in Yiddish (with English subtitles), designed for audiences unfamiliar with the Yiddish language and culture — and who might not otherwise care — to be introduced to Yiddish theatre history.

Allen Lewis Rickman directs the production. He also acts in it alongside Yelena Shmulenson and musical director Steve Sterner.

The Essence tickets will be available soon.
