*The Wanderers* is a play about two couples: Orthodox Jewish newlwyeds Schmuli and Esther, and secular Jew Abe and a movie star (Holmes). The newlyweds' future is all spelled out for them; their marriage is arranged, and they don't know each other well. Abe's future is in his own hands — or so he thinks. When the movie star emails Abe unexpectedly, she puts that belief, and both their marriages, to the test. Both couples wrestle with the question of whether they can be happy with what they have, or if they'll always be looking for something more.

The premiere of *The Wanderers* off Broadway was initially scheduled for 2020; its world premiere was at The Old Globe in San Diego. Playwright Ziegler has had three other shows off Broadway since 2015: *A Delicate Ship*, *The Last Match* (which also played the Laura Pels Theatre), and *Actually*. Across the pond, Nicole Kidman won an Evening Standard Award for her performance in Ziegler's play *Photograph 51*, about scientist Rosalind Franklin's role in discovering DNA.

Director Barry Edelstein has more than 20 Off-Broadway directing credits, which include multiple works at [The Public Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/public-theater) and [Classic Stage Company](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/classic-stage-company). One of these was *Race*, a play he also adapted, in 2001. *The Wanderers* marks his first major Off-Broadway production in more than 10 years; his last was *The Twenty-Seventh Man* at the Public.

In *The Wanderers* play, celebrity author Abe and actress Julia (Holmes) are both married to other people, but are emailing in secret, which puts their marriages on the line. Separately, Esther and Schmuli, who hardly know each other, have just gone through with an arranged marriage. One pair thinks they can change their futures; the other has their futures laid out for them.

Holmes returns to the New York stage for *The Wanderers* off Broadway; she previously appeared in 2012's *Dead Accounts* and 2008's *All My Sons*, both on Broadway. She is best known for her role as as Joey Potter on *Dawson’s Creek*, and her other screen credits include *Ray Donovan*, *First Daughter*, *Don’t Be Afraid of The Dark*, and Ang Lee's *The Ice Storm*.

Another starry name in the cast is Sarah Cooper, the comedian best known for her impersonations of former president Donald Trump. She also has a comedy special on Netflix, *Everything's Fine*.

*The Wanderers* in New York follows three previous productions: the world premiere at San Diego's Old Globe and runs at TheatreJ in D.C. and Gesher Theatre in Tel Aviv, Israel. Ziegler has had three other shows go up off Broadway: *The Last Match*, *Actually*, and *A Delicate Ship*.

Director Barry Edelstein has a 25-plus-year career as a director, producer, and writer. He's staged more than 20 Off-Broadway productions, and he's the artistic director of the Old Globe, whose productions of *Almost Famous*, *Allegiance*, *Bright Star*, *Meteor Shower*, and more have gone on to Broadway.

Gene Feist and Elizabeth Owens founded Roundabout Theatre Company in 1965. With the support of the Steinbergs’ Charitable Trust, the Harold & Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre opened to the public in March 2004. The theatre is Roundabout's Off-Broadway home. The inaugural production at the venue was Lynn Nottage’s *Intimate Apparel*, starring Viola Davis.

The complex’s main stage is the Laura Pels Theatre, named after the Roundabout board member who previously funded the company’s first Off-Broadway home at the Criterion Center. The space originally contained 350 seats. During renovation, a 74-seat mezzanine was added to accommodate more of the company’s subscribers.

The theatre is widely used to produce premieres and revivals by established artists. In 2005, Roundabout completed work on the 62-seat Black Box Theatre in the lowest level of the complex. Besides being used as a rehearsal space and for educational programmes, it is also home to the Roundabout Underground initiative, which produces new works by emerging playwrights.
