About Which Way To The Stage

Ana Nogueira’s new play Which Way to the Stage will run at the Newman Mills Theater from April to May 2022. Get Which Way to the Stage tickets on New York Theatre Guide now.

Previously titled Here She Is, Boys (and titled Mask Only before that), Which Way to the Stage is a play set outside a musical. Two friends, Jeff and Judy, are waiting at the stage door of the Broadway musical If/Then in 2015, hoping to meet the show's star. (Tony Award winner Idina Menzel led the show in real life, but she isn't named here.) While they wait, they chat, as friends do to pass the time. But their conversation and their experience outside that stage door shakes up their friendship, which they've had for decades. And as expected outside a stage door with a celebrity-led show, there are plenty of tourists involved.

Which Way to the Stage is part of MCC Theater's 2021-22 season, following the premieres of Jocelyn Bioh's romantic comedy play Nollywood Dreams and Van Hughes and Nick Blaemire's musical Space Dogs in the fall and winter, respectively. (Coincidentally, Nogueria is married to Blaemire, so she's making her MCC writing debut just after her husband.) Nogueria's New York playwriting debut took place back in September 2016, when her play Empathitrax premiered with New York's HERE Arts Center. In November 2019, MCC held a reading of Mask Only, which would later become Which Way to the Stage off Broadway.

Nogueria is also an actress, known for playing Penny Ares on The Vampire Diaries, Lena Mercer on The Blacklist, and Sarah in the film Sarah + Dee. She's also acted off Broadway, most recently in The New Group's production of Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice in 2019, and played Eliza Hamilton in a 2013 workshop production of Hamilton at Vassar College.
