Playwright Agnes Borinsky and director Tina Satter make their Playwrights Horizons debuts with the world premiere of The Trees. Get The Trees tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
The Trees is a play about David and Sheila, two siblings who visit the park near their father's house, fall asleep, and wake up to find that their feet have become rooted into the ground. They make the best of their scenario by turning the park into a utopian community, overseeing the eclectic group of people that take shelter there — their Polish grandmother, a snack vendor, a Rabbi, a boyfriend, and more — while the harsh world rages around them.
The Trees is Agnes Borinsky's first live play with Playwrights Horizons, but she previously wrote the audio drama The Marriage of Earth and Sky for the company's podcast, Soundstage. Her other Off-Broadway works include A Song of Songs, Ding Dong It’s the Ocean, Of Government, and Brief Chronicle, Books 6-8.
Director Tina Satter heads up the Obie Award-winning theatre company Half Straddle, whose plays have appeared across the U.S. and the world. In 2021, she made her Broadway debut with Is This A Room, her theatrical adaptation of the FBI interrogation of Reality Winner. That show also premiered off Broadway with Vineyard Theatre in 2019 and received critical acclaim both times.
