Snow in Midsummer Information

Snow in Midsummer, a murder mystery play by Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig, is at Classic Stage Company through midsummer. Snow in Midsummer tickets are on sale now. Get tickets to Snow in Midsummer in New York.

Snow in Midsummer is a play set in a rural town which has been ravaged by drought, as a businesswoman quickly learns when she moves to take over a factory there. But it's no ordinary drought — it's the result of a curse placed on the town by a woman years prior, after she was convicted of a crime she didn't commit and executed anyway. Snow in Midsummer is adapted from The Injustice to Dou Yi That Moved Heaven and Earth, a classical Chinese drama by Guan Hanqing, and Cowhig's version ties the drought of the original story to the sweeping ecological disasters of climate change today. Through this ghost story, Cowhig illustrates how past mistakes can destroy future generations, and also what restorative justice looks like.

Snow in Midsummer is the second play in Cowhig's China Trilogy, a group that also includes The World of Extreme Happiness — about the human toll of developing China's socialist market economy — and The King of Hell's Palace — about the blood trade that ended up bringing AIDS to China. Her body of work, which also includes the plays Lidless and 410[Gone] combines Asian dramatic elements and stories with contemporary social issues. Cowhig made her New York debut with Lidless in 2011, and her works have been performed in cities like Seattle, London, San Francisco, and Stratford-Upon-Avon, where Snow in Midsummer had its world premiere with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2017.

Our review

Snow in Midsummer

Complain as we might about the rapidly rising New York heat, getting snow in midsummer would be a nightmare. So, too, is it in New Harmony, China in Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig's play of the same name at Classic Stage Company, albeit for much graver reasons than needing to dig out your extra layers. Snow in Midsummer backloads and occasionally overextends its drama, but it's a mostly suspenseful watch based on a time-honored story.Cowhig's show is an adaptation of The Injustice to Dou E that Touched...
