What the new theatre vaccine guidelines mean for kids

Find out the vaccination requirements in place for children ages 5-11 to attend a Broadway or Off-Broadway show.

Beginning May 1, Broadway vaccine mandates were relaxed. Whereas all Broadway theatres required proof of vaccination through April 30, beginning in May, it became up to each individual Broadway theatre to decide whether to check proof of vaccination for audiences of all ages. Mandatory mask-wearing will be lifted on July 1, at which point masks are optional for audiences of all ages at most shows.

When Covid-19 vaccines first became more widely available to young children, the vaccination requirements in New York changed in turn. On January 10, the Broadway League announced that children ages 5 to 11 would have to be fully vaccinated to attend a Broadway show from January 29 to April 30.

The guidance was in accordance with the latest NYC guidelines under Mayor Eric Adams. Previously, per a December mandate by former Mayor Bill de Blasio, children aged 5-11 were able to present proof of one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. Now, as with the existing vaccination requirements for theatregoers aged 12 and older, children must have received a one-dose vaccine or the second dose of a two-dose vaccine 14 days before their performance, and they may only present a negative test to attend a show if they have proof of a legitimate medical or religious exemption from vaccination. Children under 4 are not permitted in Broadway theatres.

Read below for current information on the masking and vaccination requirements for children at all Broadway shows, as well as family-friendly Off-Broadway shows. This article will be continually updated with the newest information as it is announced.
