Theatre nominees in this year’s TV and films awards season

Find out which Broadway stars are nominated for their performances across TV and film this year.

With theatres closed for the majority of 2020, we've all turned to our televisions and films for entertainment more than ever. Thankfully, Broadway has been represented well in the latest offerings, with Tony Award-winning stars continuing to take centre stage.

To acknowledge all the theatre-related events that are nominated at this year's major ceremonies, as well as the Broadway stars, we've summated them all in one place. Find out all the hottest films and television shows that have attracted the attention of awarding bodies. Who knows, you may even discover something new to add to your "to-watch list".

Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr in Hamilton

Hamilton

To date, Hamilton has won over 50 awards worldwide, but will the film release from July 2020 increase this tally? Lin-Manuel Miranda was nominated for his performance as Alexander Hamilton at the Golden Globes, while Daveed Diggs is acknowledged at the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG Awards). Hamilton was also nominated in the Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy category at the Golden Globes.

Hillbilly Elegy

A Yale law student returns to Ohio in this 2020 drama, inspired by J.D. Vance's memoirs. Although the film isn't based on theatre, Glenn Close plays Bonnie "Mamaw" Vance in Hillbilly Elegy, recently playing Norma Desmond in the Broadway revival of Sunset Boulevard. Her performance is celebrated across the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards in the Best Supporting Actress categories.

Hollywood

Ryan Murphy's Golden Age-inspired miniseries features a whole host of Broadway stars, including Darren Criss and Patti LuPone. But, Jim Parsons' performance was recognised by the Golden Globes. He was nominated in the best performance by an actor in a supporting role in a limited series category, going against John Boyega and Daniel Levy.

Little Fires Everywhere

Celeste Ng's 2017 novel following the demise of a small-town community was one of the most-watched series of 2020. In the show, Kerry Washington plays Mia Warren, a new resident who is forced to play into pre-existing ways of life. For her performance, she's been nominated for her outstanding performance at the SAG Awards. Recently, Washington starred in the Broadway revival of American Son.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Released in the latter end of 2020, August Wilson's 1920s play has now been given the Netflix treatment. Although the entire cast are nominated collectively at the Critics Choice and SAG Awards, as well as a best adapted screenplay nomination at the Critics Choice Awards, its leading stars have been heavily celebrated.

Playing the title role herself, Viola Davis gave an incredible performance in the film and is subsequently nominated this season across all ceremonies. In his last acting role before he passed, Chadwick Boseman's posthumous performance was championed by critics in its release. Across all major award ceremonies, Chadwick Boseman is nominated for his performance as Levee.

One Night in Miami

Kemp Power's stage play has yet to receive its Broadway premiere. But, with a variety of nominations for its film adaptation including Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars, One Night in Miami's move to Broadway could be imminent. Leslie Odom Jr. is nominated across all major film ceremonies for his portrayal of Sam Cooke including the 2021 Academy Awards, with the original song "Speak Now" acknowledged in respective best original song categories. Listen to Leslie Odom Jr singing "Speak Now" here

One Night in Miami's Regina King was also been nominated for best director at the Golden Globes, with all actors appreciated by means of two nominations relating to the outstanding performance by the entire ensemble. 

Ozark

The third series of midwest American crime drama Ozark sees Laura Linney play Wendy Byrde, PR guru turned lobbyist. For her performance in the latest series, she's nominated in the respective categories at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards that celebrate the best performances by actresses in drama series.

Ratched

If you've read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, you've probably heard of Ratched. Inspired by Ken Kesey's novel, Ratched allows audiences to find out more about Nurse Mildred and the inner workings of Lucia State Hospital. Two cast members were nominated for Golden Globes: Sarah Paulson as Nurse Mildred and Cynthia Nixon as Gwendolyn Briggs. 

The Comey Rule

Inspired by real-life events, the two-part miniseries dramatises FBI director James Comey in the early months of Donald Trump's presidency. Playing the FBI head honcho, Jeff Daniels wowed audiences in The Comey Rule, and was subsequently nominated for his performance at the Golden Globes.

The Father

Florian Zeller's 2012 play follows Anthony, an octogenarian who is suffering from dementia. After West End and Broadway runs, in which the play digs into "our most profound fears", The Father was adapted for cinemas in 2020. Anthony Hopkins has received nominations for best actor across all major ceremonies. Similarly, Olivia Colman has also picked up Golden Globe, SAG and Oscar nominations for her performance as Ann.  

The Good Lord Bird

Ethan Hawke plays John Brown, an abolitionist soldier whose actions directly instigated what would become the American Civil War. Based on James McBride's novel, this historical drama wowed critics for its ability to acknowledge its original source material, while commemorating past events. Its cast members have been nominated too, with Ethan Hawke nominated in the best actor categories at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, while Daveed Diggs is nominated by Critics Choice.

The Prom

Gaining a legion of fans in its Broadway run, The Prom became a global phenomenon with a star-studded Netflix film adaptation. Only James Corden was nominated for his performance as Barry Glickman (at the Golden Globes), however the musical film is nominated at the Globes and Critics Choice Awards in their respective best comedy categories.

The Trial of the Chicago 7

Adapting Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird into a best-selling Broadway play was no mean feat for Aaron Sorkin. He continues his acclaimed writing career with The Trial of the Chicago 7, nominated for Best Picture at this year's Oscars. 

The seven defendants, played by the likes of Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen and Jeremy Strong to name a few also gave incredible performances too, with the entire cast nominated for their outstanding performance at the SAG Awards. There's an original soundtrack in The Trial of the Chicago 7 too, with "Hear My Voice" (sung by Celeste) nominated for best original song at the Oscars.

Your Honor

Inspired by the 2017 Israeli series Kvodo, Your Honor sees a judge balance morality with respectability, protecting his teenage son who has killed another young man. Bryan Cranston plays judge Michael Desiato, who was nominated for his performance at this year's Golden Globes.
