Rooms, a rock romance to close on 10 May 2009
Van Hill Entertainment announced today that the Off-Broadway premiere of Rooms, a rock romance, starring Leslie Kritzer and Doug Kreeger, will conclude its run at New World Stages on 10 May 2009. When the musical closes it will have played 20 previews and 64 regular performances.
Rooms, a rock romance opened at New World Stages / Stage 2 on 16 Mar 2009, following previews from 27 Feb and was originally booking through to 28 Jun 2009.
The musical opened to good reviews: "a show worth checking into." (NY Daily News); "an appealing surprise." (NY Post); "it's an amiable and powerfully performed trip back to the late '70s." (Back Stage); "an entertaining and enjoyable affair" (Variety).
The musical has score and lyrics by Paul Scott Goodman ('Bright Lights Big City') and book by Goodman and Miriam Gordon, and is directed by Scott Schwartz ('Goldaï¿½s Balcony,' 'Bat Boy: The Musical,' 'tick, tickï¿½ BOOM!,' 'Jane Eyre') and choreographed by Matt Williams.
Rooms, a rock romance begins in 1970s Glasgow where Monica, an ambitious singer/songwriter meets Ian, a reclusive rocker. The two quickly become entangled creatively and romantically. Their music takes them first to London and ultimately to New York City, where they discover the vibrant new music scene and create an intimate partnership, their love deepening while their personalities drive them apart. A five-piece rock band accompanies these two characters as they search for the balance between ambition and happiness.
Leslie Kritzerï¿½s Broadway credits are 'Hairspray' (Shelly - Replacement: 2002), 'Legally Blonde' (Serena: 2007) and 'A Catered Affair' (Jane Hurley: 2008). Her off-Broadway credits are 'Godspell' (York Theatre at St. Peter's ), 'Bat Boy: The Musical' (Union Square Theatre) and 'The Great American Trailer Park Musical' (New World Stages Stage I). Kritzer recently starred as 'Hildy' in 'On the Town' for Encores! at City Center.
Doug Kreeger appeared on Broadway in 'Les Misï¿½rables' (multiple: 2006). Off-Broadway he starred in the York Theatre Company's production of 'Thrill Me: The Leopold & Loeb Story.' He most recently starred regionally in the world premiere production of Rooms, a rock romance.
Rooms, a rock romance will have scenic design by Adam Koch, costume design by Alejo Vietti, lighting design by Herrick Goldman and sound design by Jonathan Weston.
The musical had its World Premiere as a co-production between MetroStage in Alexandria, VA and Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, NY after a showcase as part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) in 2005.
Time Life is set to record the Off-Broadway Cast Recording of Rooms, a rock romance. The recording will be produced by multiple Grammy nominee Robert Sher (who also produced Time Lifeï¿½s release of the 2008 recording of 'Gypsy') and Producing Associate is Brandon Wardell. The recording will take place 12 May 2009 in Manhattan. A spring release is planned.
