QuaranTune #2: "As If We Never Said Goodbye" from Sunset Boulevard
A show tune a day keeps the quarantine blues at bay...
Yesterday, three-time Tony Award winner Glenn Close celebrated her 73rd Birthday and today she is bringing us an Andrew Lloyd Webber classic for our second edition of "QuaranTunes"...
Although Ms. Close had already forged a stellar career on the Broadway stage, appearing regularly from 1974 through 1992 and even taking home two Tony Awards for Death and the Maiden and The Real Thing (alongside a nomination for Barnum), it was undoubtedly her starring turn as Norma Desmond in the 1994 Broadway premiere of Sunset Boulevard that immortalized her in the hearts of Broadway fans everywhere.
A rare treat for theater fans, Ms. Close would astonishingly reprise the iconic role more than two decades later in a West End revival at the London Coliseum in the spring of 2016, which would ultimately transfer to Broadway's Palace Theatre from February through June 2017 to rapturous acclaim.
Check out Ms. Close's 1995 Tony Awards performance, before going on to claim her third Tony that night, ultimately securing her place in the Theater Hall of Fame. In our hearts, we know that as soon as New York City's theaters re-open their doors and bring us the very best in LIVE entertainment once more, it will be "as if we never said goodbye"...
And this time will be bigger, And brighter than we knew it. (Norma Desmond, Sunset Boulevard)
