New York Theatre Workshop concludes its 2019-2020 season

NYTW cancels the rest of its current Off-Broadway season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

New York Theatre Workshop has now confirmed that due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, it will not return to its scheduled programming in the 2019-2020 season.

NYTW Artistic Director James C. Nicola and Managing Director Jeremy Blocker commented: "We are heartbroken to have to end our season prematurely. These productions and residencies along with readings and workshops we were meant to be producing represent important collaborations with theater-makers we deeply value. We look forward to being back in a room with them, and with our audiences, when it is safe for us to do so."

Affected productions include Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok's Sanctuary City, which began previews at the Lucille Lortel Theatre on March 4 but was forced to close on March 12 ahead of its official opening, and the hotly anticipated revival of Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters, starring Academy Award nominee Greta Gerwig and Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac. The latter (a new adaptation by Pulitzer Prize finalist Clare Barron) was scheduled to play New York Theatre Workshop from May 13 through July 12, 2020 under the direction of Tony Award winner Sam Gold.

NYTW has also stated that it remains committed to these artists and projects in the hopes of staging the productions in a future season. More details will be announced in the coming months.

In addition to these main productions, NYTW has also canceled all remaining Next Door at New York Theatre Workshop projects, as well as the two summer residencies at Adelphi University and Dartmouth College.
