Manhattan Theatre Club has announced complete casting for the upcoming world premiere production of Sugar in Our Wounds, written by Donja R. Love and directed by Saheem Ali, which begins previews at New York City Center's Studio at Stage II on June 5, 2018, before an official opening on June 19 and a limited engagement through to July 8, 2018.

The complete cast includes Stephanie Berry (as Aunt Mama), Sheldon Best (as James), Fern Cozine (as Isabel), Tiffany Rachelle Stewart (as Mattie), and Chinaza Uche (as Henry).

Synopsis: "On a plantation during the Civil War, a mystical tree stretches toward heaven. It protects James, a young slave, while he reads newspapers about the imminent possibility of freedom, as the battle rages on. When a brooding stranger arrives, James and his makeshift family take the man in. Soon, an unexpected bond leads to a striking romance, and everyone is in uncharted territory. But is love powerful enough to set your true self free? This lyrical and lushly realized play is part of poet, filmmaker and playwright Donja R. Love's exploration of queer love at pivotal moments in Black history."

The creative team has also been announced and features scenic design by Arnulfo Maldonado, costume design by Dede Ayite, lighting design by Jason Lyons, sound design by Palmer Hefferan, original music by Michael Thurber, movement by Darrell Grand Moultrie, and hair & makeup design by Cookie Jordan.

Manhattan Theatre Club's next production at New York City Center's Stage I will be the world premiere of Anthony Giardina's Dan Cody's Yacht, directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes, which begins previews on May 15, before an official opening on June 6 and a limited engagement through to July 8, 2018. And finally, MTC's current Broadway revival of Saint Joan, starring four-time Tony Award nominee Condola Rashad, continues at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre through to June 10, 2018.

Sugar in Our Wounds Tickets are available now for performances from June 5 through to July 8, 2018.
