*A Man of No Importance* is a show about secrets, love, and putting on a play. The title character, Alfie Byrne, is an ordinary bus driver living in Dublin, Ireland in 1964. As a side hobby, he also heads up St. Imelda's Players, an amateur theatre troupe based at and named after his local church. His latest choice of show for the players to perform is *Salome* by Oscar Wilde, in which the title woman attempts to seduce John the Baptist. But church leaders deem the play blasphemous and try to stop the production from going forward.

Because of the backlash, his fellow players are hesitant to join the show. However, Alfie manages to convince Adele, a newcomer who Alfie is supposed to marry, to be Salome. His top choice for John the Baptist, his friend Robbie, refuses the part — and only then does Alfie realize he has feelings for Robbie. Suddenly, Alfie has a whole new struggle to contend with, and a secret that would endanger his quest to get his play done, not to mention his friendships and his job, even more. But as he wrestles with his own identity, he finds support in the most unexpected of places. 

The three creators of the *A Man of No Importance* musical are frequent collaborators. Its music and lyrics are by the Tony- and Grammy-winning duo Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, who have co-written multiple other musicals with the now-late bookwriter Terrence McNally: the Tony-winning *Ragtime* and *Once on This Island*, the musical adaptation of the animated movie *Anastasia*, and *Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life*. Separately from McNally, Flaherty and Ahrens have written the popular shows *Seussical* and *Rocky the Musical*.

On his own, McNally was a five-time Tony-winning playwright whose other works include *Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune*, *Love! Valour! Compassion!*, *Master Class*, and the books for the musicals *Kiss of the Spider Woman*, *The Full Monty*, and *Catch Me If You Can*.

*A Man of No Importance* is based on a modestly successful, mixed-reviewed 1994 film of the same name starring Albert Finney. The musical adaptation has never been performed on Broadway, but the show earned success of its own and made its way across the Atlantic Ocean and back. The 2002 world premiere of *A Man of No Importance* was off Broadway at [Lincoln Center's Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/lincoln-center-mitzi-e-newhouse-theater); its cast included Tony winners Roger Rees and Faith Prince, and Steven Pasquale. After winning the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical in 2003, the show went on to play in California and twice in England. The 2022 production marks the first revival of *A Man of No Importance* in New York.

This production is led by [Jim Parsons](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/jim-parsons), a Golden Globe and four-time Emmy Award-winning actor for playing Sheldon Cooper on *The Big Bang Theory*. Though his screen career — which also includes roles in *Hollywood*, *Hidden Figures*, and *Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile* — made him a household name, he's also a stage veteran, having performed in theatre across the country since 1993. He made his Broadway debut in the Tony-winning *The Normal Heart* in 2011 and has since appeared on Broadway in *Harvey*, *An Act of God*, and the Tony winner *The Boys in the Band* and its Netflix film adaptation. *A Man of No Importance* is a musical about love and showbiz — small-town showbiz, that is. It's 1964 in Dublin, Ireland, and bus conductor Alfie Byrne leads the St. Imelda's Players amateur theatre troupe at a local church. Through art, particularly the plays of Oscar Wilde, Alfie is able to express what he cannot in words: he is gay.

When he tries to put on Wilde's *Salome*, though, convincing his friend and coworker Robbie (for whom Alfie has feelings) to play the lead isn't his only struggle. The church deems it blasphemous and tries to shut the production down. As he fights for the show to go on, Alfie's also fighting for acceptance, from his peers and himself, and finds it in the most unexpected places.

Before *A Man of No Importance* was a musical, it was a 1994 indie movie starring Albert Finney, Michael Gambon, Rufus Sewell, and Brenda Fricker. Bookwriter Terrence McNally, composer Stephen Flaherty, and lyricist Lynn Ahrens adapted it for the stage in 2002. Flaherty and Ahrens are known for writing the musicals *Seussical* and *Rocky* together, and Tony Award winners *Ragtime* and *Once on This Island* with McNally. The late McNally is a five-time Tony-winning playwright and musical bookwriter known for *Master Class*, *Love! Valour! Compassion*, and *Kiss of the Spider Woman*.

Lincoln Center Theater presented the world premiere of *A Man of No Importance* off Broadway with a cast including Roger Rees, Faith Prince, and Steven Pasquale. Joe Mantello directed; he would go on to helm the smash hit *Wicked* the following year.

In 2003, *A Man of No Importance* won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical and got seven Drama Desk Award nominations, including Outstanding Musical and nods for its book, lyrics, score, and direction. Since that production of *A Man of No Importance* in New York, the musical has been performed thrice in England, including once in London's West End, and across the U.S. However, the show has never returned to New York — until now.

Jim Parsons leads the 2022 cast as Alfie; his last New York stage gig was the Tony-winning Best Play Revival *The Boys in the Band* in 2018. His other Broadway credits include *Harvey*, *The Normal Heart*, and *An Act of God*, and his prolific screen career includes roles in *Hidden Figures* and *Hollywood*. He's best known for playing Sheldon Cooper on all 12 seasons of *The Big Bang Theory*, earning four Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe.

A Man of No Importance - NYC - TodayTix

With audiences on three sides of a small, knickknack-laden stage, which actors frequently spill off of with instruments in hand, [*A Man of No Importance*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24233-a-man-of-no-importance-tickets) at [Classic Stage Company](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/classic-stage-company) perfectly captures the feel of scrappy community theatre in a church basement. That's a high compliment, to clarify. In fact, it's the entire point of the show, a stirring and gorgeous one in its simplicity.

The musical is set up as a play-within-a-play, with bus passengers in Dublin introducing the story of their conductor, Alfie Byrne ([Jim Parsons](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/jim-parsons)). They're all members of his amateur theatre troupe, save for the bus driver, Robbie (A. J. Shively), though Alfie hopes he'll join for more reasons than one. Alfie is gay; Robbie is not, but the next best thing to being with him, then, is convincing him to lead an Oscar Wilde play.

Wilde is, of course, a deliberate choice for the playwright that consumes Alfie's every waking moment. "Wilde had no life aside from art. Remember that. He lived in the realm of the aesthetic. He never descended into the sewer," Alfie says of his idol. He does the same thing, throwing himself into the theatre troupe to escape his desires, while secretly wishing the theatre will be his ticket to living his truth. (Alfie is urged on at points by Wilde's ghost, played by Thom Sesma, thoroughly enjoying himself.) It's a clever conceit, as *A Man of No Importance* is very aware of its own theatricality, and how performing Alfie's story shows acceptance in itself.

Parsons convincingly inhabits Alfie's earnestness and diffidence, if not his Irish accent. Alfie's intimate little story of self-discovery isn't quite big enough for all its characters, but each member of the ensemble shines in even the most underwritten parts. Shereen Ahmed is marvelous as the reticent leading lady Adele, and Mary Beth Peil's few lines as Mrs. Grace are some of the show's funniest. ("She's a little old [to play] me daughter, Mr. Byrne. Can she be me sister?" she asks of the decades-younger Adele.)

In stage time, Alfie is most evenly matched by his sister Lillian (a motherly, wisecracking Mare Winningham) who can't understand why he hasn't settled down. And Shively brings an effortless, mischievous charm to Robbie, lighting up the stage with "The Streets of Dublin," his energetic solo and the show's best number among a strong array of Irish folk tunes by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.

*A Man of No Importance* ultimately rushes to its end, but this being a 20-year-old musical whose writer (the late, great Terrence McNally) has passed, dwelling on that is fruitless. This revival — the first since its New York premiere in 2002 — has songs and performances that will rouse the soul, and that's of the utmost importance.

James Joseph Parsons&nbsp;was born on March 24, 1973 in Houston, Texas. He is&nbsp;known for his Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning TV role as&nbsp;Sheldon Cooper on CBS's&nbsp;The Big Bang Theory.

He was raised in Spring, Texas, and attended Klein Oak High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Houston and&nbsp;enrolled in graduate school at the University of San Diego in 1999. Throughout his education, Parsons took a keen interest in theatre, appearing regularly in shows at the Stages Repertory Theater, becoming a founding member of&nbsp;Infernal Bridegroom Productions, and completing a two-year course in classical acting in partnership with the Old Globe Theatre. He moved to New York City after his graduation in 2001.

He made his Off-Broadway debut as&nbsp;Jeremiah in Manhattan Ensemble Theater's production of Franz Kafka's&nbsp;The Castle, which opened in January 2002. He went on to appear in two productions for La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego:&nbsp;as&nbsp;Valère in&nbsp;Molière's&nbsp;Tartuffe&nbsp;in 2002 and as&nbsp;Prince Tartaglia in&nbsp;The Love for Three Oranges&nbsp;in 2004. Founded in 1967, Classic Stage Company (also known as CSC) is located in the heart of Manhattan’s East Village close to Union Square. CSC produces revivals and reimaginings of classical plays and musicals for contemporary audiences, which often relate to current issues.

The company's first venue was a 100-seat theatre within Rutgers Presbyterian Church, and it moved to its current venue, a former carriage house, in 1973. The 199-seat theatre has a thrust stage with audiences seated on three sides of the performance space.
