Hair: The Public Theatre's revival to play at Broadway's Al Hirschfeld Theatre

The Public Theater's Broadway transfer of the critically acclaimed off-Broadway revival of Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical will open on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on 5 Mar 2009, following previews from 13 Feb 2009.

The current tenant of the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, A Tale of Two Cities, will end its run on 16 Nov 2008.

Directed by Diane Paulus with book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot, Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical has been playing to sold-out houses since it began previews on 22 Jul 2008 in Central Park, where it will close on 14 Sep 2008 after three extensions.

There has been no cast announced for the Broadway production.

The musical is being produced on Broadway by The Public Theater and Elizabeth Ireland McCann.

In a statement McCann said, "I had been asking myself, 'Why Hair? Why now?' And when you look at how audiences at the Delacorte jumped from their seats to sing and dance with the cast at the end of the show, you realize that Hair's joy and unbridled hope for a better world is in step with where we are today. Those sentiments certainly echoed like a sonic boom when America went to the polls yesterday and elected Barack Obama."

Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical was the show that, in 1967, officially opened The Public Theater�s long-time home on Lafayette Street.

Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical has the distinction of being the first off-Broadway musical to transfer to Broadway, (It moved to Broadway on 29 Apr 1968 and ran for 1,873 performances).
