Complete cast set for '1776' on Broadway, including Carolee Carmello
The musical revival will go up at the American Airlines Theatre.
UPDATE: Grammy and Emmy Award winner Kristolyn Lloyd (Dear Evan Hansen, Confederates) will assume the role of John Adams from Crystal Lucas-Perry beginning October 25. Lucas-Perry will play her final performance October 23.
They're making history! Roundabout Theatre Company has named the full cast for its Broadway revival of the musical 1776. Performances begin at the American Airlines Theatre on September 16 ahead of an October 6 opening night, and the limited run will go through January 8, 2023.
The all-female, transgender, and non-binary ensemble cast also includes Crystal Lucas-Perry as John Adams, Gisela Adisa as Robert Livingston, Nancy Anderson as George Read, Becca Ayers as Col. Thomas McKean, Tiffani Barbour as Andrew McNair, Allyson Kaye Daniel as Abigail Adams/Rev. Jonathan Witherspoon, Elizabeth A. Davis as Thomas Jefferson, Mehry Eslaminia as Charles Thomson, Joanna Glushak as Stephen Hopkins, Shawna Hamic as Richard Henry Lee, Eryn LeCroy as Martha Jefferson/Dr. Lyman Hall, Liz Mikel as John Hancock, Patrena Murray as Benjamin Franklin, Oneika Phillips as Joseph Hewes, Lulu Picart as Samuel Chase, Sara Porkalob as Edward Rutledge, Sushma Saha as Judge James Wilson, Brooke Simpson as Roger Sherman, Salome B. Smith as Courier, Sav Souza as Dr. Josiah Bartlett, and Jill Vallery as Caesar Rodney.
Three-time Tony Award nominee Carolee Carmello rounds out the cast as John Dickinson; she previously played Abigail Adams in the show's 1997 Broadway revival, also produced by Roundabout.
Ariella Serur, Grace Stockdale, and Imani Pearl Williams are standbys.
1776 takes place in Revolutionary War-era America, when the Continental Congress is meeting to determine whether to declare independence from Britain. The show centers on John Adams and his quest, in the face of scorn from his fellow politicians, to get the Declaration of Independence approved and signed. The show won three Tony Awards in 1969, including Best Musical.
Though 1776 features nearly all white male characters, this revival, directed by Diane Paulus and Jeffrey L. Page, features a diverse cast in race and gender. It played a pre-Broadway run at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachussets this summer, featuring much of the same cast.
