*Almost Famous* will offer a digital Broadway lottery for $45 tickets. The lottery is open for entries between midnight and 3 p.m. the day before each performance. Winners are drawn at 9 a.m. for the following day's matinee performances and 3 p.m. for evening performances. Entrants can request up to two tickets.

Additionally, *Almost Famous* will offer $40 rush tickets in person at the [Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/bernard-b-jacobs-theatre), beginning when the box office opens at 10 a.m. each day (except Sunday, when it opens at noon). Based on Crowe's own life, *Almost Famous* follows William Miller, an aspiring teenage music journalist who gets assigned to cover a rock band on tour. As he gets closer to the band and deeper into the 1970s rock world, however, he starts to lose his objectivity. Crowe adapted his own Oscar-winning screenplay into the musical's book and lyrics, and Pulitzer and Tony winner Tom Kitt composed the music for Almost Famous on Broadway.

- The story of *Almost Famous* is inspired by Crowe's own experiences as a teenage rock journalist. It's only fitting that he adapted his own movie for the stage — who could tell his story better?
- Crowe also wrote the lyrics for the *Almost Famous* musical. For the movie, he wrote the lyrics to three of Stillwater's songs, including *Fever Dog*, which is also included in the musical. (Nancy Wilson of Heart wrote the music.)
- Costume designer David Zinn referenced both the movie's looks and photos from the 1970s — of iconic rockers like Glenn Frey, Stevie Nicks, and Kris Kristofferson, and of groupies — to create the stage costumes for *Almost Famous*. Some of the costume pieces are actual vintage clothing, and some are handmade from Etsy!
- Though *Almost Famous* isn't a jukebox musical, it does include snippets of over a dozen iconic rock songs. The scene where the characters sing Elton John's *Tiny Dancer* on a tour bus, for example, is part of the show.
- Neal Preston, a longtime friend of Crowe's, shot photos of the *Almost Famous* cast that are used in the production. Preston is a rock photographer  known for his photos of bands like Queen and Led Zeppelin, and singers like Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Madonna, and Michael Jackson.
- Stillwater, the fictional band in *Almost Famous*, shares its name with a real rock band. The characters in the film and musical aren't based on the real band's members, but the movie's creators had to pay Stillwater to use their name.

Cameron Crowe’s musical adaptation of his much-loved 22-year-old Oscar-winner, [*Almost Famous*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/25473-almost-famous-tickets), gets off to a very promising start. So much so you silently hope Crowe (book and lyrics), Tom Kitt (music and lyrics), and director Jeremy Herrin can sustain the high level for the whole 2.5 hours. Long story short, no such luck. 

Fortunately, the show is filled with fine performances and getup that takes us back a half-century without looking like a costume party. The energizing early vignettes come packed with rockers, groupies, backstage bustle, swirling doorways, blazing stage lights, flared jeans, macrame halter tops and crocheted hot pants. We know the time, the place, who’s who, and what’s at stake. 

In California circa 1973, socially awkward 15-year-old William Miller (Casey Likes) is aching to be seen and heard. He plans to make that happen, like Crowe did, as a music journalist. He lands an assignment for Rolling Stone to cover Stillwater, an up-and-coming group behind the scratchy hit “Fever Dog.” Guitarist Russell Hammond (Chris Wood) has the skills, voice, mystique, and long hair (parted down the middle) of a star.

William’s rigid widowed mom (Anika Larsen, channeling Frances McDormand from the film) reluctantly gives him the green light to go. William quickly discovers onstage rock gods are just self-serving neurotics behind the scenes.

Up to this point, the focus is squarely on William, who does everything he can to make his dream happen. He pesters the esteemed rock critic Lester Bangs (Rob Colletti). He charms Russell and frontman Jeff Bebe (Drew Gehling, game for anything). He befriends Penny Lane (an iridescent Solea Pfeiffer, in the role made famous by Kate Hudson), who favors the term “band aid” to "groupie" and recklessly prefers Russell over everyone else. 

William stays busy. And then… he turns passive. He becomes just another person in the room, the one with the tape recorder. Things that happen between Russell and Penny and within Stillwater have nothing to do with William. Without a strong focus, the story falls slack and meanders. 

Even when it’s blurry, *Almost Famous* has smart things to say about the power of music, weirdness of celebrity, force of family, and bittersweetness of life. It’s also a love story – a few of them. There’s William and Penny, Penny and Russell, and, more subtly, Crowe and pop legend Joni Mitchell. He’s seen to it that she looms large in the show. A tiny fragment of her achy ballad, “River,” plays in the background onscreen. The musical turns it into a lyrical point of connection. “Call me if you ever need a rescue, or a river to skate away on,” Penny tells William. “‘River.’ Joni Mitchell,” he responds. Later in the show it becomes their dramatic duet.

Showcasing the song and its peerless poetry on stage is a bold move. The same goes for Elton John’s irresistible “Tiny Dancer,” which the Stillwater band members sing in the movie and show as they mend fences. Music heals. They’re great songs, of course, and that cuts two ways. 

New songs by Crowe and Kitt (*Next to Normal*) are easy on the ears but don’t quite rise as high. “1973,” which begins as a solo for Likes and builds into a rousing group number, is a lively show opener. “Morocco,” sung beautifully by Pfeiffer, expresses Penny’s desires and, like the character, is pretty but vague. “The Night-Time Sky’s Got Nothing on You,” a duet between Russell and Penny, is a vocal highlight.

In the end *Almost Famous* is a mid-level musical that lives up to its title. Like groupies trailing after rock stars, it chases but never captures the quirky luster of the cinematic source.

The Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre opened on January 11, 1927. The venue was originally named the Royale by real-estate magnates, the Chanin Brothers, as part of a three-theatre complex.

In 1930, the Chanins transferred ownership of all three houses to the Shubert Organization. During the Great Depression, control of the Jacobs passed to John Golden, who renamed the theatre after himself and ran it from 1934 to 1936. (This venue is not to be confused with the current John Golden Theatre, which is right next door.)

The Shuberts regained control in 1936 and restored the theatre's name to the Royale. It was renamed the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on May 9, 2005 after the longtime Shubert Organization president.

The Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre is accessible by subway; it is nearest to the 42nd Street - Port Authority Bus Terminal on the A, C, or E line. The theatre is also located near various bus stops: 8th Ave/W 46th St. on the M20 and M104 lines; 7th Ave/W. 44th St. on the M104 line; and 8th Ave/W 43rd St. on the M20, M104, and M34A-SBS lines.
