Michael R. Jackson's musical centers on Usher, a sort-of stand-in for Jackson himself. The character works as a Broadway usher to pay the bills, but he, a Black and queer man, is trying to finish his work-in-progress musical about a Black and queer musical writer. He struggles against an ensemble of six Thoughts, who represent his doubts that he can succeed in a world that's harsh to fat, Black, gay men. Learn more about A Strange Loop on Broadway.
A Strange Loop had its world premiere at Playwrights Horizons in 2019 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama the following year, alongside multiple other Off-Broadway awards. Following a pre-Broadway run in Washington, D.C., the show opened at Broadway's Lyceum Theatre to rave reviews. The five-star New York Theatre Guide review of A Strange Loop calls the show "revolutionary" and reads, "This is art as activism in its highest form."
The musical was the most Tony-nominated show of the 2021-22 Broadway season with 11 nods. It took home the Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical prizes, and three of its actors — Jaquel Spivey as Usher, and L Morgan Lee and John-Andrew Morrison as two of the Thoughts — received acting nods.
The cast also includes Antwayn Hopper, John-Michael Lyles, James Jackson, Jr., and Jason Veasey.
