UPDATE: Additional casting for Into the Woods on Broadway has been announced. New cast members include Nancy Opel as Cinderella's Stepmother, Aymee Garcia as Jack's Mother, Alysia Velez as Rapunzel, and Delphi Borich, Felicia Curry, Alexander Joseph Grayson, Paul Kreppel, Diane Phelan, and Lucia Spina as understudies.

No one leaves for good! The star-studded New York City Center production of Into the Woods, which initially had a limited run earlier this spring, is set to transfer to Broadway this summer. Into the Woods will have an eight-week run from June 28 to August 21 at the St. James Theatre; opening night is July 10.

This production first ran for two weeks in May as part of New York City Center's Encores! series, which mounts three seldom revived musicals each year. The run sold out and received critical and audience acclaim. The Broadway transfer of Into the Woods marks the third revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's 1987 fairytale musical, which originally won three Tony Awards including Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score.

Much of the cast of the Encores! production will return for the Into the Woods Broadway engagement. Returning cast members include Grammy winner Sara Bareilles as the Baker's Wife, Tony winner Gavin Creel as Cinderella's Prince/Wolf, Julia Lester as Little Red Riding Hood, Cole Thompson as Jack, Annie Golden as Grandmother/Cinderella's Mother/Giant's Wife, David Patrick Kelly as Narrator/Mysterious Man, Ta'Nika Gibson as Lucinda, Albert Guerzon as Cinderella's Father, Brooke Ishibashi as Florinda, Kennedy Kanagawa as Milky White, and David Turner as Steward.

New cast members include Tony Award winner Patina Miller as the Witch (replacing Heather Headley), Tony nominee Brian d'Arcy James as The Baker (replacing Neil Patrick Harris), Tony nominee Phillipa Soo as Cinderella (replacing Denée Benton), and Tony nominee Joshua Henry as Rapunzel's Prince (replacing Jordan Donica).

The cast also includes Jason Forbach, Mary Kate Moore, and Cameron Johnson. Additional casting has yet to be announced.

The entire Into the Woods creative team from Encores! reunites, led by director Lear deBessonet. The creative team also includes music director Rob Berman, choreographer Lorin Latarro, scenic designer David Rockwell, costume designer Andrea Hood, lighting designer Tyler Micoloeau, sound designers Scott Lehrer and Alex Neumann, puppet designer James Ortiz, and hair and makeup designer Cookie Jordan.

Into the Woods mashes up multiple Brothers Grimm fairytales into one fantastical journey. At the center of the story are a baker and his wife who wish for a child, and they discover that a witch put a curse on their family long ago. To reverse the curse, they must bring the witch a collection of fairytale items like Cinderella's slipper, Rapunzel's golden hair, and Little Red Ridinghood's cape — but in the woods, no one's path to happily ever after is smooth.

Into the Woods is one of multiple Sondheim revivals as of late, following the nine-time Tony-nominated Company revival led by Katrina Lenk and Patti LuPone on Broadway, and an Off-Broadway revival of Assassins at Classic Stage Company this past winter. The multi-award-winning composer died in November 2021 at age 91, and this production has been dedicated to his memory.
