Working with his longtime collaborator Grant Heslov, George Clooney adapts the 2005 film the two co-wrote that earned them an Academy Award nomination. Now, his performance and playwriting credit marks Clooney’s Broadway debut, which particularly excites the Hollywood A-lister. “I am honored, after all these years, to be coming back to the stage and especially, to Broadway, the art form and the venue that every actor aspires to," he said in a statement. 

He will work alongside another starry name: David Cromer, who has multiple Broadway shows under his belt plus Tony and Obie awards. A MacArthur Fellow, Cromer said of Clooney's role in a statement that “Edward R. Murrow operated from a kind of moral clarity that feels vanishingly rare in today’s media landscape. There was an immediacy in those early live television broadcasts that today can only be effectively captured on stage, in front of a live audience.”

Cole Escola moved to New York for college and, after dropping out, found their way into the city’s comedy scene. In 2008, Escola met comedian Jeffery Self, who shared their passions for theatre and ‘90s sitcoms, inspiring them to create a YouTube series as the "Very Good Looking (VGL) Gay Boys." Following the cult success of their videos, they received their own TV show on Logo, *Jeffery & Cole Casserole*, which ran for two seasons. Escola later had roles on *Difficult People*, *Search Party*, *Big Mouth*, *At Home with Amy Sedaris* (which earned them a Writers Guild Award), and more before writing and leading the original cast of *Oh, Mary!*

Beyond acting, Escola wrote for comedy TV shows like *Ziwe*, *The Other Two*, and *Difficult People*. In 2021, they released a YouTube rendition of their live special "Help! I'm Stuck With Cole Escola" and, in 2023, they released an homage to '70s westerns on YouTube called "Our Home Out West." Vanity Fair added Escola’s performance to its 25 Best Performances of 2023 list.

## Who is Cole Escola?

Cole Escola — who wrote and originally played the title role of *Oh, Mary!* on and off Broadway, is an actor, writer, and comedian who found their path in New York City’s comedy circuit. In 2008, Escola met comedian Jeffery Self, who shared Escola’s love for theatre and '90s sitcoms, motivating the pair to create a series of YouTube videos as the "Very Good Looking (VGL) Gay Boys." Following the videos’ cult success, Escola and Self launched their own TV show on Logo named *Jeffery & Cole Casserole*, which ran for two seasons. *Othello* explores the marriage of Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army, and Desdemona, who wed the military leader against her father's wishes. Iago, Othello's ensign, harbors a deep-seated resentment towards him and conspires to manipulate Othello's trust and sow seeds of jealousy. Through deceitful machinations, Iago convinces Othello that Desdemona has been unfaithful with Cassio, Othello's lieutenant. Consumed by jealousy, Othello's love turns to suspicion, leading him to murder Desdemona in a fit of blind rage. When the truth is revealed, Othello is devastated by the depth of Iago's betrayal and Desdemona's innocence. The tragedy concludes with Othello's suicide and Iago's apprehension.
