About Delacorte Theater

Operated by the not-for-profit Public Theater, the Delacorte Theater is located in the heart of Central Park. The venue opened in 1962 and has a capacity of 1,800 seats.

The theatre is named for Valerie and George T. Delacorte, Jr., who donated the money for its construction. The inaugural production in 1962 was The Merchant of Venice, featuring George C. Scott and James Earl Jones.

The Delacorte primarily hosts free Shakespeare in the Park productions each summer. The theatre is also home to Public Works productions, which include residents of all five boroughs of New York City in the cast and creative process.

How to get to the Delacorte Theater off Broadway

The Delacorte Theater is closest to the 81st Street - Museum of Natural History subway stop on the B and C lines. The nearest bus stop is W 81 St/Central Park W on the M79-SBS line.
