Built on the site of the former Apollo Theatre and Lyric Theatre, which had fallen into neglect and disrepair, the new Lyric Theatre officially opened on Jan. 26,1998 as the Ford Center for the Performing Arts with the musical Ragtime.
After renovations the theatre was re-christened the Hilton Theatre in 2005 and once again changed its name to Foxwoods Theatre in 2010. The UK-based Ambassador Theatre Group acquired the lease to the theatre — its first Broadway venue — in May 2013 and renamed it (back) to the Lyric Theatre in March 2014.
