Wicked becomes 7th longest-running show in Broadway history

Wicked surpasses Oh! Calcutta! on its 5,960th performance at the Gershwin Theatre

"Congratulotions" to Broadway's smash hit musical Wicked which becomes the 7th longest-running show in Broadway history at the Gershwin Theatre tonight, when it surpasses Oh! Calcutta! with 5,960 performances on the Great White Way!

Wicked officially opened at the Gershwin Theatre on October 30, 2003, following previews from October 8, and has since been performed in over 100 cities in 15 countries around the world and in six different languages. Productions have wowed audiences in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, Germany, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, The Philippines, China, Mexico, and Brazil, amassing over $4.5 billion at the global box office with audience figures reaching almost 55 million people worldwide.

A film adaptation is also in the works at Universal Pictures with a release date set for December 20, 2019, and Stephen Daldry serving as director.

Wicked features music & lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, a book by Winnie Holzman, and is based on the popular novel by Gregory Maguire.  

Synopsis: "Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch."

The current principal cast of Wicked includes Jennifer DiNoia (as Elphaba), Amanda Jane Cooper (as Glinda), Ashley Parker Angel (as Fiyero), Fred Applegate (as The Wizard), Kristen Martin (as Nessarose), Tony Award nominee Isabel Keating (as Madame Morrible), Jye Frasca (as Boq), and Martin Moran (as Dr. Dillamond).

The Broadway production is directed by Joe Mantello, with choreography by James Lynn Abbott, and features scene design by Eugene Lee, costume design by Susan Hilferty, lighting design by Kenneth Posner and sound design by Tony Meola.

Wicked is produced on Broadway by Universal Stage Productions, Marc Platt, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt, and David Stone.

Wicked Tickets are available now for performances through to September 16, 2018.
