The hit true crime thriller Kenrex will debut off Broadway this spring, playing the Lucille Lortel Theatre for 11 weeks only starting April 15. Opening night is April 26.
Based on real events, Kenrex traces the story of Ken Rex McElroy, a Missouri criminal who never served prison time despite many offenses and was killed before he could be brought to justice. Solo performer Jack Holden plays all 35 characters in this staging of the story.
Kenrex is written by Holden and Ed Stambollouian, who also directs. John Patrick Elliott wrote and performs the original score on stage. The show also has set and costume design by Anisha Fields, lighting and video design by Joshua Pharo, sound design by Giles Thomas, and movement direction by Sarah Golding.
The play comes to NYC following three critically acclaimed productions in London. A five-star Kenrex review on London Theatre calls it "an electrifying, brutal and gripping work" and also reads, "Holden thrillingly plays every single role both distinctively and effortlessly [...] Stambollouian’s dynamic direction gives us clever and highly theatrical stagecraft.
“As much as UK audiences have responded to this play, at its core this is a deeply American story,” said Holden and Stambollouian in a joint statement. “We are thrilled for this chance to present it to American audiences.”
