Recounting the life and dozens of crimes of one man from Missouri, Kenrex off Broadway is a thrilling examination of Ken McElroy, born in 1934, and his unique life of hardship and crime that followed. Olivier Award nominee Jack Holden and Ed Stambollouian wrote the play, with Holden starring and Stambollouian directing.
London Theatre gave the drama five stars, saying Holden "stars in a tour-de-force solo performance — playing every single role both distinctively and effortlessly. Never sensationalising its subject, the production is also an examination of justice and retribution in small-town America, where poverty, lack of opportunity and a questionable legal system bubble under an ordinary community just trying to get by."
Kenrex plays at downtown's Lucille Lortel Theatre in a New York premiere produced by Aria Entertainment, Seaview, and TRW Production. Running for eleven weeks only, the production also features a taut, pulsing original score performed live by John Patrick Elliott. That score is also now available for streaming.
“As much as UK audiences have responded to this play, at its core this is a deeply American story,” said Holden and Stambollouian in a statement. “We are thrilled for this chance to present it to American audiences.”
The play won five-star reviews from multiple outlets. The Sunday Times called it “a masterclass in acting and storytelling. It’s an intensely visual experience, taking it somewhere morally complex and surprisingly moving.”
In another five-star review, The Daily Telegraph called the play “brilliantly theatrical, exhilarating, and terrifying. It’s wonderfully bold. Holden's skill lies not only in characterization or his chameleon-like ability to shift between characters, but also in his impressive, tremendously sustained energy.”
