*Sweeney Todd* will offer lottery tickets for $30. The lottery is open for entries between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. the day before each performance. Winners will be notified just after closing, and they will have 60 minutes to claim and pay for tickets to the next day's performance.

The *Sweeney Todd* musical is a tale of malice, murder, and meat pies. The title character, a barber from London, has returned to the city after being wrongly imprisoned by a merciless judge many years before. He's determined to reunite with his family, but equally importantly, get revenge, and uses his old profession to do it. After all, his razors can cut not just hair, but also throats. Todd finds an unlikely accomplice in a meat pie shop owner named Mrs. Lovett, who, unbeknownst to her customers, disposes of Todd's victims by serving them up as dinner. Todd initially plans to only target the judge and his servant, but his and Mrs. Lovett's scheme quickly spirals out of control.

The 2023 revival is the first to feature Jonathan Tunick's original orchestrations, written for a 26-piece band, since the premiere of *Sweeney Todd* on Broadway in 1979. Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury made the roles of Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett iconic with their performances in that production.

Both won Tony Awards for their portrayals, and *Sweeney Todd* won six additional Tonys, including Best Musical. Sondheim won for Best Original Score, Hugh Wheeler won for Best Book of a Musical, and legendary Broadway multihyphenate Harold Prince won for Best Direction of a Musical.

*Sweeney Todd* has been revived on Broadway twice before: in 1989 with Bob Gunton and Beth Fowler, and in 2005 with Michael Cerveris and [Patti LuPone](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/patti-lupone). All four actors received Tony Award nominations for their performances. The show has also played four times in London; its 1980 premiere won the Best New Musical Olivier Award, and two of its revivals won Best Musical Revival. The 2023 production is also nominated for Best Musical Revival.

The musical was last revived off Broadway in 2017. That production was immersive: The [Barrow Street Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/barrow-street-theatre) was converted into Harrington's Pie & Mash Shop, the action took place all around the audience members, and a resident pie maker cooked and served traditional pie and mash before each performance.

Thomas Kail, a Tony Award winner for [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets), directs *Sweeney Todd*. He reunites with fellow Tony-winning *Hamilton* collaborator Alex Lacamoire, who serves as music supervisor.

The thriller musical is titled in full *Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street*. The show, with a book by Hugh Wheeler and a score by Stephen Sondheim, has appeared on Broadway three times before. The world-premiere production opened in 1979 and won eight Tony Awards out of nine nominations, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Actor and Actress awards for Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury — Sondheim's personal choices to play Todd and Lovett.

The first Broadway revival was in 1989, and the second in 2005. Both were nominated for Best Revival, and their respective stars — Bob Gunton and Beth Fowler, and Michael Cerveris and Patti LuPone — all got acting nominations. This revival of *Sweeney Todd* on Broadway followed in its predecessors' footsteps when original stars Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford got nods!

## What to watch for

- This *Sweeney Todd* revival features Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations, as the original Broadway production did. Neither of the previous *Sweeney Todd* revivals used the full, original orchestrations.
- The show poster uses the same font and color for the musical's title as the original Broadway poster.
- Barber refuted? *Sweeney Todd* is a mini-*Hamilton* reunion: That show's director, Thomas Kail, and music supervisor, Alex Lacamoire, hold the same jobs for this production.
- Groban is such a big *Sweeney Todd* fan that he named his dog after the title character.
- The *Sweeney Todd* musical is based on a same-named 1973 play by Christopher Bond, but the title character actually first appeared in a Victorian-era serial fiction story called *The String of Pearls*. His story was immediately adapted into a few melodramas in the mid-to-late 1800s, too; one of those premiered on Broadway in 1924.
- When *Sweeney Todd* first opened on Broadway, the then-director of The Metropolitan Opera reportedly said he would have produced the show there given the opportunity. He saw Sweeney Todd's high-drama tale as "a modern American opera." Though the Met didn't end up producing the show, lots of other opera companies have.
- *Sweeney Todd* is the latest in a string of recent Sondheim revivals. His musicals *Assassins* and *Company* both played in New York in 2021, followed by *Into the Woods* and *Merrily We Roll Along* in 2022. Plus, the last production of *Sweeney Todd* in New York (an immersive Off-Broadway show in a theatre converted into a pie shop) was in 2017, alongside a Broadway revival of *Sunday in the Park with George*.

[*Sweeney Todd*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/26216-sweeney-todd-on-broadway-tickets) is back on Broadway, and there’s much to savor in this musical revival starring [Josh Groban](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/josh-groban) and [Annaleigh Ashford](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/annaleigh-ashford). Stephen Sondheim’s sublime score sounds deliciously lush as played by the 26-piece orchestra, the singing is uniformly excellent, and Hugh Wheeler’s morbidly gripping story unfolds in crisp fashion. 

However, there’s an ingredient missing in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets) director Thomas Kail’s star-studded but standard take on the 1979 musical: its essential dark edge. Subtitled *The Demon Barber of Fleet Street*, the show motors on Sweeney’s monstrous dimensions. Absent that, or even a faint whiff of borderline madness from what he’s been dealt, the production comes off as a bit too tame. 

Gorgeous music threads throughout this grisly thriller. Sweeney (Groban) returns to London after being wrongfully imprisoned for 15 years. Mourning the loss of his family because of a corrupt judge and his henchman, the barber swears revenge on the duo. He’ll use his straight razors for payback. Pie shop proprietor Mrs. Lovett (Ashford), who has a thing for Sweeney, becomes his accomplice. When Sweeney’s throat-slitting escalates, she grinds his victims into makings for meat pies. Business booms. But there’s no way this tale can have a happy ending. 

Mimi Lien’s two-tiered set makes use of the stage and a bridge above it. A counter pushed into place is the pie shop, and a crane contraption doubles as a madhouse. The bridge is used in a striking moment for a silhouetted dance. Elsewhere, Steven Hoggett’s choreography recalls awkward aerobics, particularly when all hell breaks loose near the end. Natasha Katz’s dramatic lighting is the star of the physical production.

Both leads deliver exactly what they’re best at. Groban, a Tony nominee for *Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812*, has a nice-guy persona and lacks the sinister side to convince as a man "even rats fear," according to the title song. He also blends into the crowd in group scenes. But when he sings, Groban commands focus 100 percent. He taps directly into the mournful tones of “The Barber and His Wife,” in which he recalls his past, and the despair of “Epiphany,” as he faces his future.

Last seen on Broadway as Dot in Sondheim’s *Sunday in the Park With George*, Ashford is a very fine singer, but her comic chops set her apart. She won a Tony for *You Can’t Take It With You*, a play in which she bounced off the walls. She is clearly in her comfort zone here. 

Sporting a messy hairdo a la Angela Lansbury, the original Mrs. Lovett, Ashford throws herself into the part – and onto the stage. She bump-bump-bumps down a staircase on her fanny. She channels the Three Stooges and spins while on her side on the floor. She’s a riot, and she also oozes vulnerability. As funny as she is, Mrs. Lovett is a villain because she keeps a life-and-death secret from Sweeney.

Gaten Matarazzo of *Stranger Things* plays Tobias, who becomes Mrs. Lovett’s helper. He makes the most of the famous song “Not While I’m Around.” Jordan Fisher and Maria Bilbao ably fill out the romantic subplot as the thwarted young lovebirds Anthony and Johanna. 

The beggar woman, played by Ruthie Ann Miles, looms extra large in this version. In a provocative stroke, when she enters the barber shop, she points here and there as if remembering something. Is her mind really gone? That question makes her fate all the more tragic – and Sweeney’s words more resonant.

“We all deserve to die,” Sweeney sings. He means himself and Mrs. Lovett. In this revival, the barber and the baker go hand in hand to hell.

Aaron Kyle Tveit was born in Middletown, New York on October 21, 1983. He is a Broadway favorite, originating the roles of Gabe in&nbsp;Next to Normal&nbsp;and&nbsp;Frank Abagnale, Jr. in&nbsp;Catch Me If You Can, and a television star, best known for his roles on The CW's Gossip Girl,&nbsp;USA Network's Graceland,&nbsp;and CBS' BrainDead.

Tveit attended Middleton High School, graduating in 2001, and majored in&nbsp;vocal performance (later switching to musical theatre) at Ithaca College in New York. He was cast in his first professional role&nbsp;as Steve in the national tour of&nbsp;Rent&nbsp;(and understudying the roles of Roger and Mark)&nbsp;during his second year at college and decided to leave Ithaca. He would, however, complete his college degree in 2012, with many of his stage roles qualifying as college credit.

His first big break in theatre came after landing the role of Link Larkin in the national tour of&nbsp;Hairspray&nbsp;in 2005, which&nbsp;led to him assuming the role in the Broadway production and making his Broadway debut in July 2006. Following regional theatre roles in Barrington Stage Company's Calvin Berger&nbsp;and North Shore Music Theatre's&nbsp;The Three Musketeers, he would then make his Off-Broadway debut to great acclaim, originating the role of Gabe in the musical&nbsp;Next to Normal&nbsp;at Second Stage Theater in January 2008. The role earned him his first Lucille Lortel Award nomination. He then starred as Dean in the Playwrights Horizons production of&nbsp;Saved!&nbsp;from May to June 2008&nbsp;before heading back to Broadway to star as Fiyero in the hit musical&nbsp;Wicked. He left Oz in November of that year to reprise the role of Gabe in the Arena Stage production of&nbsp;Next to Normal&nbsp;in Washington, D.C. After picking up a Helen Hayes Award for his efforts there, he returned and continued as Fiyero from January to March 2009. It was then time for the Broadway premiere of&nbsp;Next to Normal&nbsp;at the Booth Theatre, which cemented his status as a Broadway star.

Tveit's next big venture was to lead the cast of Catch Me If You Can, originating the role of&nbsp;Frank Abagnale, Jr. at the Seattle tryout in the summer of 2009, eventually landing on Broadway in March 2011. Prior to this, he made a brief return to the musical&nbsp;Rent, this time starring as Roger Davis at The Hollywood Bowl in August 2010.

Across the pond, Tveit made his London stage debut as John Wilkes Booth in the Menier Chocolate Factory revival of Stephen Sondheim's&nbsp;Assassins&nbsp;from November 2014 to February 2015. He&nbsp;would return to&nbsp;Barrington Stage Company in Massachusetts to star in another Sondheim musical in August 2017, playing Bobby in&nbsp;Company.

Tveit has also enjoyed a prolific career on screen. Broadway fans will likely remember his&nbsp;turn as Danny Zuko in Fox's widely acclaimed Grease Live!&nbsp;in 2016. His big break came in the form of the recurring role of&nbsp;Tripp van der Bilt in The CW's Gossip Girl&nbsp;from 2009 to 2012, which led to a long run as&nbsp;Mike Warren in&nbsp;USA Network's Graceland&nbsp;from 2013 to 2015 and to the role of&nbsp;Gareth Ritter in&nbsp;BrainDead&nbsp;on CBS in 2016. His most notable film role to date is as Enjolras&nbsp;in the 2012 adaptation of Les Misérables.

Tveit returned to the stage after landing the coveted role of Christian in the pre-Broadway world premiere of&nbsp;Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which reopened Boston's Emerson Colonial Theatre from June to August 2018. The production transferred&nbsp;to Broadway's Al Hirschfeld Theatre and opened in June 2019. Tveit then won his first Tony for Best Actor in a Musical.

Sutton Lenore Foster was born on March 18, 1975 in Statesboro, Georgia. She is a two-time Tony Award-winning Broadway actor, also known for her television role as Liza Miller on TV Land’s Younger.

Raised in Troy, Michigan, Foster attended Troy High School but left before graduating to join the National Tour of The Will Rogers Follies&nbsp;under the direction of Tommy Tune. She would also go on to study at Carnegie Mellon University for one year&nbsp;before departing to pursue a full-time career on the stage.

Foster’s most notable early stage credits include the leading role of Sandy Dumbrowski in the National Tour of Grease in 1995, which led to her Broadway debut, assuming the role at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in 1996. She would also appear in the 1997 Broadway revival of Annie and 1997 Broadway premiere of The Scarlet Pimpernel. In 1999, she took over the coveted role of Éponine in the national tour of Les Misérables, later transferring to the musical’s Broadway production in 2000.

Her big break came later in 2000 after finally landing the starring role of Millie Dilmount in the La Jolla Playhouse production of Thoroughly Modern Millie. Following her turns in regional productions of The Three Musketeers in San Jose&nbsp;and South Pacific in Pittsburgh&nbsp;in 2001, Thoroughly Modern Millie would ultimately premiere on Broadway in 2002 to great acclaim, earning Foster her first Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

Thanks to her new leading lady status, she became a regular on the Broadway stage and starred as Jo in Little Women (2005 Tony nomination), as Janet Van De Graaff in The Drowsy Chaperone (2006 Tony nomination), as Inga in Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein (2007-08), and as Princess Fiona in Shrek The Musical (2009 Tony nomination). She won her second Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical&nbsp;for her turn as Reno Sweeney in the 2011 Broadway revival of Anything Goes,&nbsp;which also led to her first Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album&nbsp;in 2012. She earned yet another Tony nomination in 2014 for her portrayal of the titular character in&nbsp;the Broadway premiere of <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/violet">Violet</a>.

Foster’s Off-Broadway credits include the 2010 Second Stage Theater production of Trust and a Lucille Lortel and Drama Desk Award-nominated performance as Charity Hope Valentine in The New Group’s 2016 revival of Sweet Charity. She has also performed in a plethora of benefit concert productions on Broadway as well as Encores! productions at New York City Center. She also starred as The Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods at The Hollywood Bowl in 2019.

On television, she is best known for her starring role as Liza Miller on Younger,&nbsp;which aired from 2015 to 2021 on TV Land. Her earlier screen credits include the leading role of Michelle Simms on&nbsp;Bunheads&nbsp;(2012-13) and guest roles on the likes of Instinct,&nbsp;The Good Wife,&nbsp;Elementary,&nbsp;Psych,&nbsp;Royal Pains,&nbsp;Law &amp; Order: Special Victims Unit,&nbsp;and Flight of the Conchords,&nbsp;among others.

As a recording artist, Foster has also released two studio albums: Wish&nbsp;in 2009 and Take Me to the World&nbsp;in 2018, along with one live album, 2011’s An Evening with Sutton Foster: Live at the Café Carlyle.

Lunt-Fontanne Theatre - TodayTix

The Lunt-Fontanne Theatre opened on January 10, 1910 and was originally named the Globe Theatre. The venue was named after the famous Shakespearean theatre in London.

The first production at the venue was the musical *The Old Town*, which opened in 1919. In the 1930s, the space became a cinema operated by the Brandt chain until it was purchased by City Playhouses Inc. in 1957. The venue reopened as a theatre on May 5, 1958, and it was renamed in honor of theatrical couple Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. The pair starred in the first production under the new ownership: Friedrich Dürrenmatt's *The Visit*. 

Producers Cy Feuer and Ernest H. Martin bought the theatre in 1960 and sold it to developer Stanley Stahl in 1965. The Nederlander Organization currently co-owns the venue with the Stahl estate.
