Based on the Academy Award-winning movie by Billy Wilder, the *Sunset Boulevard* musical features songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber with a book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton.

The show revolves around Norma Desmond, a faded star of the silent screen era, living in the past in her decaying mansion on the fabled Los Angeles street of the title. When young and promising screenwriter Joe Gillis crosses her path, she sees in this up-and-coming writer an opportunity to make her return to the big screen, with romance and tragedy to follow.

Nicole Scherzinger, the original lead singer of the pop group The Pussycat Dolls, takes on this legendary role in her Broadway debut following her acclaimed West End bow, and her London co-stars reprise their roles for *Sunset Boulevard* in New York: Tom Francis as Joe Gillis, Grace Hodgett Young as Betty Schaefer, and David Thaxton as Max Von Mayerling. 

## What to watch for

- Nicole Scherzinger joins a long line of Broadway stars who have played fading diva Norma Desmond. Tony Award winner Patti LuPone and Academy Award nominee Glenn Close have both played her on Broadway and in London's West End. Other stage stars, including Stephanie J. Block and Kathryn Evans, have taken on the role in other productions.
- Critics raved about the London production. Time Out London’s critic wrote that *Sunset Boulevard*’s “mind-blowing video and a truly singular use of pop star Nicole Scherzinger power Jamie Lloyd’s triumphantly out-there take on the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic.” Additionally, Variety said that “not for one second is there any doubt that Scherzinger has a dominating presence and magnificent money notes.”
- You have likely heard some of the songs before. *Sunset Boulevard* includes the standards “As If We Never Said Goodbye,” “With One Look,” and the title song naming the Los Angeles area where this show is set, “Sunset Boulevard.”
- This production lacks traditional Broadway razzle-dazzle — and it works. Lots of Broadway shows boast stunning spectacle, from flying witches to life-size animal puppets. Here, Jamie Lloyd makes bold use of video and color, and little else but the powerful actors, to tell this reimagined story.

Scherzinger is best known as the frontwoman of the pop girl group The Pussycat Dolls, with whom she performed from 2003-10. The group's many hit songs include "Don't Cha," "When I Grow Up," "I Hate This Part," and "Buttons."

Scherzinger has had an equally successful acting career, most notably earning an Olivier Award nomination for playing Grizabella in the 2014 revival of *Cats* in London's West End. She returned to the West End in 2023 to play Norma in director Jamie Lloyd's *Sunset Boulevard* revival and now transfers with the production to Broadway.

A star on the rise, he he won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for portraying Joe in *Sunset Boulevard* in the West End. In 2020, Francis made his professional stage debut as Roger in *Rent* at the Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester under the direction of Luke Sheppard. Francis would reunite with Sheppard for his following show *& Juliet* at London's Shaftesbury Theatre, taking over the role of Romeo in March 2022 and marking his West End debut.

She went on to star as Eurydice in *Hadestown* and will make her screen debut in BBC's *What It Feels Like for a Girl.*

St. James Theatre

Designed by Warren and Wetmore, the St. James Theatre was built by producer Abraham L. Erlanger on the site of the original Sardi's restaurant (which is now located down the block). The theatre opened in 1927 as The Erlanger with the inaugural production *Merry Malones*.

The Astor family took over the venue in 1930 after Erlanger's death and renamed it the St. James Theatre in 1932.

The Shubert Organization took control in 1941 before relinquishing the building to William L. McKnight in 1957. In 1970, he passed it on to his daughter Virginia and her husband James H. Binger, the founders of theatre-ownership company Jujamcyn Theaters. The organization still operates the St. James today.

The St. James Theatre is nearest to the 42nd Street - Port Authority subway stop on the A, C, and E lines. The nearest bus stops are 7th Ave/W 44th St. on the M4, M20, and M014 line; and W 43rd St./8th Ave on the M20, M104, and M34A-SBS line.
