“Avenue Q” is a quirky block deep in Manhattan’s outer boroughs, where the rent is cheap and the characters are colorful. Recent college grad Princeton stumbles upon the street during his apartment hunt, determined to find his “purpose” and make a life for himself. The musical is basically “Sesame Street” for adults, imparting important life lessons from the perils of apartment living to the nuances of early relationships to the complications of personal finance.

The off-kilter comedy won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2004; EGOTer Robert Lopez won his first Tony for Best Score, along with lyricist Jeff Marx; and Jeff Whitty won a Tony for Best Book of a Musical. The show closed on Broadway in September 2009, and reopened off-Broadway at New World Stages in October 2009, where it has been playing ever since. Get tickets while you can. After all, everything in life is only for now.

THIS SHOW CONTAINS ADULT THEMES. May be inappropriate for 12 years of age and under. (AVENUE Q does employ puppets, however it is not suitable for young children.) Children under 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
## What to watch for
The production features 40 physical puppets, including several copies of the main characters in different costumes. Princeton leads with the most iterations, at seven different puppets. Each puppet costs approximately $10,000.

There are two types of puppets in the production: rod puppets and live-hand puppets. Rod puppets have one or two arms controlled by a rod(s). Two puppeteers operate a live-hand puppet, and each assumes one of the arms.

The money audiences put in the trays that the cast pass around during “The Money Song” is donated to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

There’s a line in the original production in the final song, “For Now,” that said “George Bush is only for now.” The line is currently “Trump is only for now.” Over the years, in various productions, the line has mentioned BP (after the oil spill), Fox News, Justin Bieber, Chick-Fil-A, Glenn Beck, and Prop 8.

The puppeteers never make eye contact with each other. The puppets only look at the other puppets, and the puppeteers look at the puppets too, in order to direct the audience’s attention toward them.

The 2004 Tony Award-winning "Best Musical"&nbsp;Avenue Q&nbsp;enjoyed a lengthy run off-Broadway at Stage 3 inside New World Stages.Often described as "Sesame Street for adults", the musical comedy lovingly parodizes childrens' television programmes and exposes the truth about what really happens when you leave college and venture out into the real world. With now infamous songs such as&nbsp;"It Sucks to Be Me",&nbsp;"If You Were Gay",&nbsp;"Everyone's a Little Bit Racist", and&nbsp;"The Internet Is for Porn" in its score,&nbsp;Avenue Q&nbsp;is a raucously outrageous treat for young adults and the young at heart, who consider themselves not easily offended.(Photos by Carol Rosegg)&nbsp;&nbsp;

New World Stages is a renowned theatre venue located in the bustling heart of New York City. This five-theatre complex is designed to accommodate a wide variety of performances, from avant-garde productions to blockbuster musicals. Each theatre in the complex is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and an intimate, comfortable seating layout, providing theatre patrons with a unique and immersive experience. The interior design of New World Stages presents a fusion of art and architecture, featuring a lobby filled with rising and falling stage curtains and top-notch facilities. This versatile and contemporary theatre venue has played host to numerous award-winning productions since its inception. The bars and restrooms at the venue have been designed keeping in mind the comfort and convenience of all visitors. There is also a gallery space which showcases art from emerging artists around the world. **Getting to New World Stages**: The venue is conveniently situated at 340 West 50th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues. The venue is easily accessible via subway; the C & E trains stop at 50th street, a mere one-block's walk from the theatre. Additionally, several parking garages offer discounted rates to theatre-goers.

Located beneath the Worldwide Plaza between Times Square and Hell’s Kitchen, New World Stages is a modern performing arts complex with five theatres for Off-Broadway productions.

The building was constructed in 1994 on the site of the third Madison Square Garden. It first opened as a Loews Cineplex Entertainment multiplex cinema, which closed in 2001.

For the next three years, the building underwent substantial renovations and finally reopened as Dodger Stages in 2004, designed by architects Beyer, Blinder, and Belle. The theatre complex was renamed New World Stages on March 16, 2006, and Stage Entertainment assumed sole ownership of the property. The Shubert Organization took over ownership and operation on November 17, 2017.

All five spaces have between 100 and 500 seats, officially deeming New World Stages an Off-Broadway venue. Stage 1 and Stage 3 are the largest theatres in the complex with 499 seats. Stages 2 and 4 offer a 350-seat capacity. Stage 5 is the smallest venue with 199 seats. The Green Room is the official bar and lounge for New World Stages, but it can also be a performance space.

## How to get to New World Stages off Broadway

New World Stages is closest to the 50th St. subway stop on the C and E lines. The nearest bus stop is 9 Av./W 50 St. on the M11 line.

## Where is *The Play That Goes Wrong* playing?

*The Play That Goes Wrong* is at New World Stages' Stage 4. The comedy play made its Broadway debut in 2017, and after running there for two years, it transferred off Broadway.

Previous productions that enjoyed long Off-Broadway runs at New World Stages after closing on Broadway are *Jersey Boys* and *Avenue Q*.
