Today, November 14th 2016, marks the 20th Anniversary of Broadway's most sizzling musical and to honour this momentous occasion, we're naming Chicago our #ShowOfTheWeek! What a perfect week it would be to revisit this titillating story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery... all those things we (still) hold near and dear to our hearts!
Chicago is the second longest-running show in Broadway history, behind Andrew Lloyd Webber's infamous Phantom, and still holds the record of being the longest-running musical revival and longest-running American musical on the Great White Way... And long may it continue to razzle dazzle us!
No wonder countless stars from the outside world have wanted to grace the Broadway stage in this classic Kander & Ebb Tony-winning tuner. At the moment, Disney Channel star Veronica Dunne is making her Broadway debut in the coveted role of Roxie Hart, sultrily shedding her squeaky-clean Disney persona from "K.C. Undercover" and embracing the inner vixen. Although a mere 21 years old, Miss Dunne is showing off an unexpected maturity in the leading lady role, as well as her delicate songbird vocals. Next up, the name on everybody's lips is gonna be... Mel B! Yes, Scary Spice will be making her Broadway debut as Roxie Hart from December 28th through to February 19th 2017. Now that is exactly what we want! What we really, really want!
Some of the company's principals have been with the show for quite some time and continue to delight with every performance. NaTasha Yvette Williams' brassy and sultry Mama Morton, Raymond Bokhour's ever-loveable Amos and R. Lowe's skilled, gender-bending performance as Mary Sunshine are always crowd-pleasing and essential parts of the production, offering the degree of stability that takes it smoothly through its many cast changes.
Although this production is the ripe old age of twenty years now, the terrific onstage band makes those Kander & Ebb classics as fresh as ever. Chicago proves that you don't need to bombard your audience with a number of lavish sets or elaborate costume changes to put together a winning musical. All you need is an intriguing story, that unforgettable Bob Fosse-style choreography... and "All That Jazz"!
Happy Birthday, Chicago!
