The show will go up at Lincoln Center Theater.
UPDATE: Becky Nurse of Salem will now begin performances November 8 and open December 4.
Something witchy this way comes! A new play by Pulitzer finalist Sarah Ruhl, Becky Nurse of Salem, will premiere off Broadway this fall. Performances will be staged at Lincoln Center Theater's Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater beginning October 27. Opening night is November 21.
Deirdre O'Connell, a 2022 Tony Award winner for Dana H., will star as the titular Becky, the descendant of a woman named Rebecca Nurse who was accused in the Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s. Becky works at a witch museum and turns to spells, pills, and love to try and free herself from her streak of bad luck, which is either a curse from her past or her troubles with the present.
The Becky Nurse of Salem cast also includes Tina Benko, Candy Buckley, Alicia Crowder, Thomas Jay Ryan, Julian Sanchez, and Bernard White.
The creative team includes set designer Riccardo Hernandez, costume designer Emily Rebholz, lighting designer Barbara Samuels, sound designer Palmer Hefferan, and projection designer Tal Yarden. Rebecca Taichman directs.
Ruhl is a two-time Pulitzer-nominated playwright for In the Next Room, or the vibrator play and The Clean House, and her other works include For Peter Pan on her 70th Birthday, Stage Kiss, and Dead Man's Cell Phone. She wrote the libretto for an opera adaptation of her play Eurydice, which premiered with The Metropolitan Opera in 2021, and another new play of hers, Letters From Max, will go up with Signature Theatre in the 2022-23 season.
