My Children! My Africa! extends by one week
The Signature Theatre have announced a one week extention of their production of Athol Fugard's My Children! My Africa!, which will now play through to 17 Jun 2012.
The play opened at the Signature Center's Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre on 24 May 2012, following previews from 1 May 2012, and was originally scheduled to close on 10 Jun 2012.
The play opened to mixed reviews: On the dull side (newyorktheatreguide); Stirring revival (NY Times); Packs a one-two wallop (NY Daily News); Overlong and a bit preachy (Newsroom Jersey).
Directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, the cast features Allison Gallerani (Isabel), James A. Williams (Mr. M) and Stephen Tyrone Williams (Thami).
In a classroom in a small Eastern Cape Karoo town in South Africa in 1984, Mr. M, an idealistic teacher, seeks to provide a future for his gifted student Thami by forming a debate team with Isabel, a spirited student from the local white school. But outside the classroom Mr. M's hopes for Thami are challenged by their generational divide and increasing political unrest.
Written in 1989 shortly before the end of apartheid, My Children! My Africa! presents a portrait of a country on the brink of revolution.
The creative team features sets by Neil Patel, lighting by Marcus Doshi, costumes by Ann Karen Perry and sound by Robert Kaplowitz
