Lucky Guy: Is Tom Hanks set for B'way debut

Michael Riedel of the New York Post reports that Oscar winner Tom Hanks has signed up to make his Broadway debut starring in Nora Ephron's new play Lucky Guy (previous working title: Stories About McAlary), a collection of scenes from the life of the late Pulitzer Prize-winning Post columnist Mike McAlary.

The production will be helmed by Tony Award winning director George C. Wolfe ('Angels in America: Millennium Approaches,' 'Bring in 'da Noise/Bring in 'da Funk.' and looks set to open at a Shubert Theatre to be announced in Jan 2013 for a limited run.

Lucky Guy was originally written by Ephron as a screen play in which Tom Hanks was set to star. When the movie was dropped, Ephron adapted the script for the stage, and is hoping that Hanks will agree to star in the play's Broadway premiere. According to Riedel, Hanks is not yet committed to the project.

Riedel writes "McAlary was the last of the rough-and-tumble tabloid city columnists, a group of crusading ink-stained wretches whose ranks included Jack Newfield, Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamill.

Ephron knew McAlary from the days that they both worked at the New York Post.

There has been no official confirmation.

Film-star Tom Hanks won Oscars for his roles in "Forrest Gump" and "Philadelphia," and was nominated for "Big," "Saving Private Ryan" and "Cast Away." Other notable movies include: "Angels & Demons," "The Da Vinci Code," "The Green Mile," "Apollo 13," "Sleepless in Seattle" and many more.
