William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin's winning, high-energy musical has been staged all over the country. Now, it returns to New York on the 20th anniversary of its Broadway bow. That premiere was an auspicious one, making stars of original cast members Celia Keenan-Bolger and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. The theatre legend James Lapine directed. Rachel Sheinkin won a Tony Award for her smart, engaging, and hilarious book.

The team behind this revival includes Danny Mefford (director and choreographer), Emily Rebholz (costume designer), David Weiner (lighting designer), Haley Parcher (sound designer), and Teresa L. Williams (scenic designer).

With a cast of colorful characters, including wise students and not-so-wise adults, the musical is a charmer thanks to its inventive structure: the audience plays an active role in the action. For each show, audience participants are chosen to compete alongside the actors, adding an improvisational element to the show, which makes no two the same. McHale previously made his stage debut as William in *Spelling Bee* at the Kennedy Center in D.C., and he makes his NYC debut with the Off-Broadway transfer. In London, he played Xanthias in a revival of Stephen Sondheim's *The Frogs* at Southwark Playhouse Borough.

He is best known, however, for his role as Artie Abrams on the TV series *Glee*, earning nominations for a Grammy Award, three Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series (winning once), and two Teen Choice Awards. Additional TV credits include *The Office, When We Rise*, and *American Horror Stories*.

McHale is also a musician, formerly a part of the boy band NLT and now a solo artist whose first album, *Boy*, was released in 2019.

Located beneath the Worldwide Plaza between Times Square and Hell’s Kitchen, New World Stages is a modern performing arts complex with five theatres for Off-Broadway productions.

The building was constructed in 1994 on the site of the third Madison Square Garden. It first opened as a Loews Cineplex Entertainment multiplex cinema, which closed in 2001.

For the next three years, the building underwent substantial renovations and finally reopened as Dodger Stages in 2004, designed by architects Beyer, Blinder, and Belle. The theatre complex was renamed New World Stages on March 16, 2006, and Stage Entertainment assumed sole ownership of the property. The Shubert Organization took over ownership and operation on November 17, 2017.

All five spaces have between 100 and 500 seats, officially deeming New World Stages an Off-Broadway venue. Stage 1 and Stage 3 are the largest theatres in the complex with 499 seats. Stages 2 and 4 offer a 350-seat capacity. Stage 5 is the smallest venue with 199 seats. The Green Room is the official bar and lounge for New World Stages, but it can also be a performance space.

## How to get to New World Stages off Broadway

New World Stages is closest to the 50th St. subway stop on the C and E lines. The nearest bus stop is 9 Av./W 50 St. on the M11 line.

## Where is *The Play That Goes Wrong* playing?

*The Play That Goes Wrong* is at New World Stages' Stage 4. The comedy play made its Broadway debut in 2017, and after running there for two years, it transferred off Broadway.

Previous productions that enjoyed long Off-Broadway runs at New World Stages after closing on Broadway are *Jersey Boys* and *Avenue Q*.

Now on Broadway a decade after it premiered in Queens, the play’s laughs and momentum do dip on occasion. Nonetheless, the cast consistently manages to make infidelity entertaining. Even when someone pulls a gun.

It’s 1923 in an English country house. Don’t let the posh locale fool you, nor that Noël Coward has been cited as an inspiration for this rom-com: Nobody’s here to mind their upper-crust manners. The onstage curtain at the [Hayes Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/hayes-theater) teases this. At first glance, you see a garden of colorful wildflowers outside the house. Soon, your eye catches squirrels boinking here and deer doing it there. It mirrors what goes on inside.

Since 1917, Sylvia ([Laura Bell Bundy](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/interviews/laura-bell-bundy-returns-to-broadway-after-15-years-in-the-cottage)) and Beau (*Will & Grace*'s Eric McCormack), who are married to other people, have carried on a *Same Time, Next Year*-style annual one-night tryst at his widowed mother’s country home decorated with animal heads. The sly implications of that decor eventually become clear. It’s always been a place about notching trophies.

It’s the morning after “passionate, wildly erotic sex.” Beau’s showering. Sylvia wears lingerie and is lit by afterglow. Per usual, he calls her Tulip, an endearment that makes her weak in the knees. But something’s different. Sylvia’s got a seven-year itch. She wants Beau to herself full-time. She has sent a telegram to her husband, Clarke (Alex Moffat, of *Saturday Night Live*), and Beau’s wife, Marjorie (Lilli Cooper), to tell them what’s going on.

In short order, they come to the love shack. The place gets even more crowded with the arrival of Deirdre (Dana Steingold) and her ex-husband Richard (Nehal Joshi). To reveal more about their interconnections and plot twists would be a killjoy. Suffice it to say there's a daisy chain of dalliances – and one link is way too close for comfort. 

Of course, that’s the point. For laughs' sake, the situation is over-the-top. Rustin raids the comedy playbook for the pure sake of humor. She includes an extended fart joke, bad puns, an ongoing gag about cigarettes and booze popping up in unexpected places, a potential murder plot (hence the gun), and a truly dopey dime-store disguise. 

“You stuck a mustache on a mustache?” asks a gobsmacked Sylvia. It’s absurd and funny, and it gets to the core of this layer cake of a comedy. Can’t have too much of a good thing. 

Jason Alexander, a *Seinfeld* alum who won a Tony for *Jerome Robbins’ Broadway*, impresses in his Broadway directing debut. He’s [assembled an ace ensemble](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/stars-of-will-and-grace-snl-legally-blonde-move-into-the-cottage-on-broadway), keeps the pace reasonably revved, and wrapped it up in a good-looking production. One quibble – he overplays his hand with grandly silly music and light cues as characters make entrances.

McCormack hams it up expertly as the haughty Beau. Cooper slow-burns until Marjorie gets a moment to let it all rip. Broadway newcomer Moffat steps up as the klutzy charmer. Best of the bunch is Bundy, who makes every comedic line and pose gleefully giggle-inducing. 

In the end, *The Cottage* is about Sylvia opening her eyes to her relationships with men. But the moment that sticks out is the hilarious sight of Sylvia plugging her nose with an old-timey phone receiver. Moments like that make *The Cottage* a Broadway funhouse.

'The Cottage' review — an over-the-top comedy funhouse

The Hayes Theater, established in 1912 and located in the heart of New York City, is a notable venue for Broadway productions. Known formerly as the Little Theatre, the Helen Hayes Theatre was renamed in 1983 in honor of the acclaimed actress. Since its renovation in 2017, the Hayes has become one of the most technologically advanced, intimate Broadway houses. Its seating capacity of 597 hasn't affected the quality and charm of performances held there. There's a moment in the new Broadway play <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/potus-or-behind-every-great-dumbass-are-seven-women-trying-to-keep-him-alive" target="_blank">POTUS</a> that made me cackle so loud, I surprised myself. It's a blink-and-you-miss-it moment. It occurs as the revolving set for POTUS is turning to a new scene in a woman's restroom. There's a tampon dispenser, and as the lights are still down, you can see the price for tampons: $2.79. Oof. The pink tax weighs heavy on the women of the play, both literally and figuratively. If only the rest of POTUS was as subtle or as smart.POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive is written by Selina Fillinger, who at 28 years old is making her Broadway debut with a play directed by five-time Tony winner Susan Stroman. No pressure. POTUS is a farce and workplace comedy about a group of women who work at the White House under a fictitious male president. And this president, who never appears, seems like an overgrown manchild who would rather start an international crisis than admit weakness.The president is also going through multiple sex scandals, such as publicly calling his wife Margaret (Vanessa Williams at her most regal deadpan) a cunt and having an affair with the 20-something-year-old Dusty (an utterly committed-to-the-bit Julianne Hough). And his female chief-of-staff Harriet (a perpetually frazzled Julie White) and his female press secretary Jean (Suzy Nakamura, doing the best Jen Psaki impression) are charged with cleaning up the mess.&nbsp;Meanwhile, the president's convicted-criminal sister Bernadette (a swaggering and crude Lea DeLaria) is hankering for a pardon, his meek secretary Stephanie (an always-reliable-for-a-laugh Rachel Dratch) is trying to assert herself, and the journalist Chris&nbsp;(a remarkably grounded Lilli Cooper) is snooping around for a scoop.The jokes are sometimes funny, mostly vulgar, with an overreliance on sex jokes and gross-out humor (the same puke gag is used not once or twice, but three times). The cast have genuine comic chemistry with each other, and the audience around me guffawed in particular at Dratch's antics. Thanks to Linda Cho's costumes, I heard the loudest audience laugh this season over a piece of clothing: the high-heeled Crocs worn by Williams, who should be nominated for a Tony Award for how well she pulls them off.&nbsp;Stroman, a master of moving multiple bodies around a room, manages to keep up the zany energy without dissolving into unintelligible chaos — the scenes that feature all the women are truly the highlights of the show, with every woman given room to take up space while keeping the main tension of the scene intact. The personalities on display here are so loud that it's a feat they don't overwhelm each other. Instead, they complement each other. The calm energy of Williams, Cooper, Hough, and Nakamura perfectly pairs with the manic energy of White, Dratch, and DeLaria.&nbsp;Throughout the play, there's a familiar refrain, spoken about different women: "Why isn't she president?" It's truly the eternal question. And after the last presidency, which inspired POTUS, we need to have a laugh, even if it's a bitter one, about how the patriarchy is a rotting zombie that refuses to die. But while POTUS starts off on a provocative note (the first word in the show is "cunt") and is pleasurably chaotic in its first act, the play loses steam during the second, and ultimately cannot decide what kind of play it wants to be.&nbsp;Fillinger told <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/22/theater/potus-selina-fillinger-broadway.html" target="_blank">The New York Times</a> that the play was inspired by the women who helped support the Trump Administration. Someone should tell Stroman and the cast.&nbsp;POTUS wants to have it both ways: It wants you to sympathize with the women supporting this terrible man in the White House and cheer them on as they learn to empower themselves, but it doesn't interrogate what kind of women would put aside their morals to support a man who has no problem grabbing women by the pussy. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Melania Trump were women working in the White House, but no one would look to them as a bastion of moral fortitude. They don't really care, so why should we?&nbsp;And it's not clear, besides the fact that these women are a diverse group, why the audience should be cheering for them. These women talk in bro speak ("get off my dick"). William's Margaret has abandoned her community to chase white supremacy (which Cooper's Chris calls her out on in one scene that has no follow-through or deeper exploration). There's also group encouragement when Hough's Dusty offers to give blowjobs to the Secret Service and goes through with it. A woman prostituting herself on behalf of other women doesn't make it more empowering. You cannot girlboss your way out of the patriarchy; you're just reaffirming its toxic practices.Ultimately, POTUS goes for an easy ending by teasing the audience with the possibility of a female president and female retribution. But considering we're not anywhere near that reality, and women are losing rights to their own bodies as we speak, such overtures of hope ring hollow. Reality is its own farce at the moment, and no one's laughing.<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/potus-or-behind-every-great-dumbass-are-seven-women-trying-to-keep-him-alive" target="_blank">POTUS&nbsp;is at the Shubert Theatre through August 14. There have been moments in the history of musical theater when, like a twister, the sheer talent and whirling spectacle of a production have flattened any negative criticism that stood to get in its way. Take October, 2003 for example. That was the month that <a href="/show/wicked">Wicked </a>opened in New York to generally dour reviews. But since then, more than 8.8 million people have found the heart, nerve and wisdom to pay a visit, resulting in the happy scene of a Broadway house filled with as many teens as adults, and making a tale, born from a 115-year-old children's novel, one of the top five highest grossing shows of all time.The latest incarnation of this impeccably oiled entertainment machine finds a new gear courtesy of a British import. Reprising the role she played on the West End for three years, Rachel Tucker steps in as the green-skinned Elphaba, a.k.a. the Wicked Witch of the West, and nearly blows the roof off the massive Gershwin Theatre with her opening number, "The Wizard and I." As the song reaches its climax, Tucker raises her arms, not especially high, but in a crooked witchly fashion, showing off the kind of smart physicality she brings throughout the evening. Opposite her, as Glinda the Good, Kara Lindsay aces the delicate assignment of being both ditzy blonde and sensitive friend while showing off her clear soprano and great comic chops.Among the show's many happy surprises, Michele Lee turns up, in fine form, as the scheming Madame Morrible, and Arielle Jacobs charms us from a wheelchair as Nessarose, until that unfortunate incident with a falling house. James Lynn Abbott's best moment of choreography comes not from any of the numerous, raucous ensemble pieces, but from a beautifully rendered bit of quiet ballet that arrives unexpectedly during the energetic "Dancing Through Life." And Stephen Schwartz's classic score provides a wonderful playground for the cast to swing upon, while reminding us of this composer's important history. Close your eyes and hear strains of Pippin in "As Long as You're Mine." Find the hint of Godspell playfulness in the staccato beats of "What is this Feeling."The Wikipedia plot summary for Wicked is over 2100 words long, which speaks not only to the show's dedicated fan base, but to the fact that this is a musical with a lot going on. It's a romantic comedy with strong political undertones, an animal rights treatise with a talking goat and flying monkeys, a parable on the pitfalls of getting what you want, a warning on the limits of friendship, and an homage to a classic film. In the realm of mythology, green-hued creatures have never had a simple time of it (see Shrek, Hulk, et al.), and rare is the story, let alone the musical, that is centered on two women who are unrelated, yet have a complex emotional attachment, while still remaining starkly unique individuals. But Eugene Lee's epic scenic design provides the framework to tie everything together. The show is completely set within the machinations of a huge clock, the Clock of the Time Dragon to be precise. And whether or not you are up on your Oz lore, this seems, at first, incongruous with the magical proceedings on stage. Why is Glinda's bubble-mobile so pendulum like? But then the metaphor becomes clearer. "I would do anything to turn back the clock," laments Elphaba, and later she demands, "Wait just a clock tick!" Once a spell is cast, it cannot be undone. 'Wicked' review
