The winners and finalists have been named for the 2026 Pulitzer Prizes, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The honor is awarded annually to an outstanding American play or musical that premiered in the previous calendar year, making shows that debuted in 2025 eligible for 2026.

Bess Wohl's Liberation won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The show centers on a homegrown consciousness-raising feminist group in 1970s Ohio, as seen through the lens of the founder's daughter 50 years later. Liberation premiered off Broadway in spring 2025 and transferred to Broadway that fall, receiving critical acclaim both times.

The show already won numerous other honors, including the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway play, and is expected to be a contender for 2026 Tony Awards when nominations are announced tomorrow, May 5.

The finalists are Nazareth Hassan's Bowl EP and Talene Monahon's Meet the Cartozians. Bowl EP premiered with Vineyard Theatre in spring 2025 and is set at an abandoned pool-turned-skate-park, where two friends explore their tender but complicated relationship as they try to make a rap record.

Meet the Cartozians premiered with Second Stage Theater off Broadway this past fall. Act 1 follows an Armenian American family fighting for citizenship in the 1920s, and Act 2 follows Armenian Americans of the 21st century debating identity and history at a reality show taping.

Pulitzer Prize for Drama winners often enjoy an increase in productions around the country and world, including on Broadway. Popular Pulitzer winners include Lin-Manuel Miranda's blockbuster musical Hamilton and Arthur Miller's classic 1949 drama Death of a Salesman, currently being revived on Broadway with Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf.
