Rodriguez, who is currently starring as Cinderella in [*Into the Woods*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/25770-into-the-woods-tickets) on Broadway, will play Basquiat's girlfriend Maya. Jensen, known for creating the acclaimed Off-Broadway docudramas [*Coal Country*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24856-coal-country-tickets) and *The Exonerated*, will play Bruno Bischofberger, Warhol and Basquiat's art dealer.

*The Collaboration* centers on the friendship and professional partnership that grew between Warhol and Basquiat as they prepared for their joint art show in the 1980s. McCarten, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of semi-fictional biopics like *Bohemian Rhapsody* and *The Theory of Everything*, imagines the artists' conversations about art, money, and life.

The two were brought together in the 1980s by their shared art dealer, who saw a joint exhibit between the two as a way to rekindle Warhol's career (he hadn't made a painting in 20+ years) and kickstart the young Basquiat's. The artists couldn't have been more different: Warhol was 30 years Basquiat's senior. Warhol was a pop artist; Basquiat, a Neo-Expressionist. As playwright Anthony McCarten explores, both were cynical for different reasons — Warhol disliked the art world's quickness to move on to the next new artists and forget older ones, and Basquiat knew that the odds were stacked against him as a Black man in a white-dominated industry.As such, they were reluctant to collaborate. But they did anyway, and&nbsp;The Collaboration&nbsp;details how their relationship developed. It didn't go smoothly, as the play shows; the men debate about art and each other's place in the art world, and they frequently look down on each other's age, race, and artistic style. And ultimately, their joint exhibit wasn't as acclaimed as their art dealer had hoped. But they find common ground, too — namely, a shared wish for art to be more about expression, and less about money. They would ultimately create many works together, including&nbsp;Ten Punching Bags (Last Supper) and&nbsp;Zenith.Ironically, after they died (only a year apart —&nbsp;Warhol in 1987 and Basquiat in 1988), both artists' works would become some of the most commodified art in recent years, appearing on everything from shirts to skateboards. But through their partnership while they were alive,&nbsp;The Collaboration&nbsp;explores what art-making means, its value, and what different generations of artists can learn from each other.The setting of&nbsp;The Collaboration&nbsp;is New York in the 1980s, so it's fitting that the show is playing here. McCarten's play had its world premiere at the Young Vic theatre in London, where&nbsp;The Collaboration&nbsp;director Kwame Kwei-Armah is artistic director. After the show wraps its New York run, it will be turned into a film, once again with Bettany and Pope as the central artists. Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope star in *The Collaboration* as Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, the most unlikely partnership the art world ever saw. Can these creative giants work together, or will they buckle under the weight of their egos? Warhol and Basquiat were an odd-couple pair, each of whom brought a different perspective to the studio: Warhol was in his 50s, white, embracing consumer culture in his pop art, and past his career's peak. Basquiat was in his 20s, Black, rebelling against commercialism in his Neo-Expressionist work, and just getting started in the art world.

Their collaboration ultimately fizzled out nearly as quickly as it began, but playwright Anthony McCarten dives into the brief, explosive era where they philosophized, traded blows, and sometimes, found common ground, not knowing their work would be both their swan songs.

Bettany and Pope starred in the show's world premiere in London and reprise their roles for *The Collaboration* on Broadway. Bettany is best known for his onscreen roles in Marvel projects like *WandaVision* and *The Avengers: Infinity War*, as well as *The Da Vinci Code* and *Master and Commander*. He has also performed in multiple London stage productions, but *The Collaboration* is his Broadway debut. Pope got his start as a stage actor, who in 2019 became one of only six actors in history to be Tony-nominated for two separate performances in the same year. He starred in *Ain't Too Proud* and *Choir Boy*, and he's also appeared in *Hollywood*, *Pose*, and *The Inspection* on screen.

McCarten, a playwright and screenwriter, has made a successful career of semi-fictional works. His films *The Two Popes*, about Popes Benedict XVI and Pope Francis; *The Theory of Everything*, about Stephen Hawking; and *Bohemian Rhapsody*, about Freddie Mercury, all received Oscar nominations. *The Collaboration* is not his first work to originate on stage (*The Two Popes* was adapted from his play *The Pope*), but it is McCarten's first Broadway play.

## What to Watch For

- *The Collaboration*'s Broadway premiere is a kind of homecoming. Much of the play is set in New York: The artists work in a studio there, and their joint exhibit, *Paintings*, was displayed at a gallery in the Chelsea neighborhood.
- Bruno Bischofberger, the art dealer who brought Warhol and Basquiat together, likened their exhibit to a boxing match: He wanted to create public buzz about which artist was better. Bischofberger is a minor character in *The Collaboration*.
- Warhol was also an indie filmmaker who created more than 60 movies. This part of his career is left out of *The Collaboration*, but the stage design includes projections as a nod to his film work.
- A film adaptation of *The Collaboration* with Pope and Bettany is in the works.
- McCarten has two Broadway shows in the 2022-23 season. He wrote the book for *A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical*, which also begins performances in November.

The Samuel J. Friedman Theatre originally opened on December 7, 1925 as the Biltmore Theatre. Herbert J. Krapp designed the building for impresario Irwin Chanin. Its inaugural production was *Easy Come Easy Go*. 

From 1952 to 1962, CBS used the theatre for television and radio broadcasting purposes. In 1963, it reopened as a traditional theatre with Neil Simon's *Barefoot in the Park*.

In 1987, the theatre closed following an arson attack and sat vacant for 14 years. In 2001, Manhattan Theatre Club took over the venue and reopened the performance space in 2003 after renovations. MTC renamed it the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on September 4, 2008, to honor the Broadway publicist.
