The new musical&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/kpop" target="_blank">KPOP</a>&nbsp;will join the 2022-2023 Broadway season, beginning performances October 13, 2022 at the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/circle-in-the-square-theatre" target="_blank">Circle in the Square Theatre</a>. Opening night is November 20.Leading the cast of&nbsp;KPOP&nbsp;is K-pop star Luna, making her Broadway debut. Luna was a member of the K-pop group f(x) beginning in 2009 and has since gone onto a successful solo career. The global phenomenon of K-pop is now taking over Broadway with a new musical. Tickets to *KPOP* on Broadway are on sale now. Get *KPOP* tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

## What is *KPOP* on Broadway about?

The *KPOP* musical takes audiences behind the scenes of the competitive, energetic, high-stakes Korean pop music industry, and the talent, ambition, and commercial interests that drive it in equal measure. The show centers on a K-pop singer dealing with an inner struggle that could bring down a major K-pop music label and rock the industry. She's dealing with this, though, on the day of a special American concert featuring some of K-pop's biggest stars, who are all trying to make it big stateside. Amid the drama, you can expect plenty of high-octane, joyous, and catchy music and choreography that will have you grooving along.

The characters in *KPOP* on Broadway may be fictional, but they're played by real-life K-pop stars. The lead role is originated by Luna, a member of the K-pop group f(x) who also has a solo career as a singer and Korean musical theatre actress. Kevin Woo of U-KISS, Min-Young Lee of Miss A, and Bohyung Kim of Spica are also part of the original KPOP Broadway cast.

The world premiere of *KPOP* was at Ars Nova in 2017, starring *Mean Girls*'s Ashley Park and *Be More Chill*'s Jason Tam. That production, co-produced by Ars Nova and Ma-Yi Theater Company and conceived by Woodshed Collective, was immersive. Audiences played the part of "focus groups" brought in by a K-pop agent wanting to know how to make K-pop and its stars appealing to an American audience. The audience went through two floors' worth of rooms set to look like rehearsal spaces, recording studios, and finally a theatre where the stars put on their finished performance. In between, audiences also saw them deal with perfectionist pressure, gaining fame and likability at the expense of tireless work and distancing themselves from aspects of their ethnicity.

The Broadway production, taking place in the more traditional Circle in the Square Theatre, has changed in terms of setup and scope; that is, the show is no longer immersive, and the plot has changed slightly. But the show's themes remain the same, and with the Off-Broadway writing team and Woodshed Collective still on hand, *KPOP* on Broadway still promises to be a multimedia spectacle that combines live music and dancing with video projections and more to transport audiences into the concert world, and also still dives deep into the dark underbelly of the industry.

Before the premiere of *KPOP* in New York, this new version of the musical was slated to launch a pre-Broadway run at Signature Theatre in Washington D.C. in December 2021. This run was canceled amid the pandemic, so the show opened directly on Broadway.

With a cast of K-pop and musical theatre stars, *KPOP* delivers nothing less than an electrifying showcase of all-around talent. K-pop only exploded onto the international music scene in the past 10 years, but the genre has been around since the 1990s. The boy band Seo Taiji and Boys, formed in 1992, is credited with pioneering modern K-pop, which blends traditional Korean music with elements of international styles like hip-hop, rock, disco, jazz, reggae, folk, and even classical.

The 1990s also saw the rise of "idol" culture, inspired by the American popularity of MTV. Record labels train and promote select K-pop "idols" as talented, trendy, and attractive to global audiences. Passionate, often young, fanbases form around these idols — think of them like the members of today's boy bands. These stars have a lot of pressure to maintain a carefully curated, hyper-public image, which the *KPOP* musical explores.

*KPOP* first premiered in 2017 as an immersive Off-Broadway production at Ars Nova. In that version, audiences walked through multiple rehearsal spaces, recording studios, and backstage areas to meet K-pop performers, looking for feedback on how to get America interested in K-pop. *KPOP* on Broadway has been reworked for the intimate Circle in the Square Theatre — the show is no longer immersive, so audiences won't be included in the action. However, they'll still learn how these performers are asked to distance themselves from their culture, work to exhaustion, and become perfectionists to achieve international popularity.

In addition, the immersive theatre company Woodshed Collective, which designed *KPOP* off Broadway, is on board for the Broadway transfer, so audiences will surely get swept up in the show's world in exciting ways.

## What to Watch For

- *KPOP* is a multimedia show, so expect eye-popping video, projections, and visual effects in addition to the live performances.
- Helen Park and Max Vernon wrote the music for *KPOP* on and off Broadway. They earned three Drama Desk Award nominations for the Off-Broadway production, and won a Lucille Lortel Award, Off-Broadway Alliance Award, and Richard Rodgers Award.
- The Off-Broadway iteration of *KPOP* had a real bar built into the set where audiences could grab a drink as they walked through the show. This version likely won't have one within the set, but the Circle in the Square does have a lobby bar with drinks and refreshments.
- A review in Time Out New York described *KPOP* as "the behind-the-music drama of *Dreamgirls* merged with the individualization project of *A Chorus Line*," two now-classic musicals about showbiz and the unseen hard work of performers.

Designed by Alan Sayles, the Circle in the Square Theatre (along with its much larger sibling, the [Gershwin Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/gershwin-theatre)) is inside the confines of the Paramount Plaza office tower. The Circle in the Square Theatre was built in 1970 as the Uris Brothers tore down the former Capitol Theatre in order to construct the tower.

The current Broadway theatre is the successor of a same-named Off-Broadway theatre, which operated from 1950 to 1995 at multiple locations in Greenwich Village. The Circle in the Square repertory company staged its first Broadway production — a revival of *Mourning Becomes Electra* — at its current venue on November 15, 1972.

The venue is one of the smallest and most intimate spaces on Broadway. Productions are generally staged in the round, as audiences are seated on three sides of the stage. The theatre is also associated with the Circle in the Square Theatre School, the only accredited drama school attached to a Broadway house.

The Circle in the Square Theatre is accessible by subway, with the closest stop being 50th St. on the C or E line. The 50th St. stop on the 1 line is also nearby. The closest bus stop to the theatre is 8th Ave/W 50th St. on the M50 line.
