Fresh off the press! Gutenberg! The Musical!, starring Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells, will open on Broadway on Sept. 15. The show within a show follows two friends putting on a musical about Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press.

The comedic musical, by Scott Brown and Anthony King, will run at the James Earl Jones Theatre through Jan. 28, 2024. Alex Timbers will direct. Gad and Rannells originated the roles of Elder Cunningham and Elder Price in The Book of Mormon, and this reunion marks Gad’s return to the stage after a 12-year hiatus.

“It’s been 12 years since I’ve been on a Broadway stage,” said Gad in a statement. “And after 12 years, the only person who would agree to take the stage with me again was my co-star from 12 years ago. I am grateful that Andrew Rannells said yes because I really didn’t have the energy to do a one-man show.”

The creative team will feature scenic designer Scott Pask, costume designer Emily Rebholz, lighting designer Jeff Croiter, and sound designers Cody Spencer and M.L. Dogg. Rachel Sterner will serve as the production stage manager.
