'Heated Rivalry' is heating up the NYC theatre scene

The past six months have seen a musical parody of the hit TV show, the Broadway debut of one of its stars, and sightings of more actors in Broadway audiences.

If you're patiently, or not-so-patiently, waiting for season 2 of Heated Rivalry to come out, the best way to get your fix in the meantime is by "reheating" season 1 of the hit HBO Max show and reading the Rachel Reid-authored books that serve as its source material. The second-best way is by being a theatre fan.

Since the Canadian hockey romance series — centered on the secret relationship between two fictional major leaguers — exploded into a global sensation, multiple of its stars have found their way from the Canadian ice to NYC's Theatre District. There's even an unofficial Heated Rivalry stage adaptation off Broadway, the first of multiple to debut around the world.

We've rounded up all the ways the Heated Rivalry and theatre worlds have crossed over so far, and we're sure there will be more as the series continues.

Summary

  • The hit HBO Max TV show has been adapted for the stage as Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody
  • TV star François Arnaud makes his Broadway debut in 2027
  • Co-stars Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie have both been spotted at Broadway shows

It's impressive that writer/composer Dylan MarcAurele not only penned a Heated Rivalry parody musical within mere months of the TV show's release, but penned one that's "better than it has any right to be," per New York Theatre Guide's rave review. "MarcAurele succeeds with his musical for much the same reason showrunner Jacob Tierney did with the TV adaptation: They make something new out of the story without losing its heart, and they take that assignment just a bit more seriously than the genre requires."

Broadway stars Jimin Moon and Jay Armstrong Johnson play the stick-crossed lovers Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, whose story is set to cheeky original tunes like "Big Ass, Cold Heart" and "Gym Song" (if you know, you know). Newly extended through November 1, the musical is the first of multiple Heated Rivalry parodies on stage: An unaffiliated show called Deep-Heat Rivalry will come to London in fall 2026, and MarcAurele's production has planned runs in Edinburgh and Montreal.

François Arnaud makes his Broadway debut in Three Days of Rain

He's going from the New York Admirals to the New York stage. When it comes to Heated Rivalry TV stars actually performing on Broadway, François Arnaud — who skyrocketed to fame for his performance as Scott Hunter — has emerged as the one to break the ice.

In February, just before Heated Rivalry season 2 drops, he's making his Broadway debut in Richard Greenberg's drama Three Days of Rain, following two generations grappling with the secrets left behind after a famous architect's death. Arnaud and his Broadway co-stars — Superman's David Corenswet and The Handmaid's Tale's Yvonne Strahovski — make a perfect hat trick.

Hudson Williams spotted in the audience and the rehearsal room

Hudson Williams, who stars in the Heated Rivalry TV series as Shane Hollander, has been spotted on the Broadway scene multiple times this year. On separate trips to NYC, he visited the recently closed drama Giant, starring Tony and Olivier winner John Lithgow, and the Tony Award-winning Best Musical Maybe Happy Ending (in which we think he'd make an excellent Oliver).

But equally exciting for theatre fans was a photo shared in February of director Les Waters, playwright Sarah Ruhl, and actors Williams, Julianne Moore, and April Matthis in what appeared to be a rehearsal room, perhaps for a play reading. Whatever they were working on, we can't wait to find out more.

Connor Storrie attends Proof

Connor Storrie, who co-stars in the TV show as Ilya Rozanov, took the NYC stage for the first time in February. He wasn't on Broadway, though; he was hosting Saturday Night Live. But he eventually made his way to the Theatre District, as fans spotted him at a June performance of the play Proof starring Ayo Edebiri and Don Cheadle.

Is Storrie's own Broadway debut in the cards? On social media and Reddit, he's been rumored to star in the spring 2027 revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, but those rumors remain unfounded as of now. But if it ended up proving true, and the revival coincided with Heated Rivalry season 2... talk about a career hot streak.
