Forever Tango: Grammy winner Luis Fonsi
Grammy Award-winning Puerto Ricon born singer Luis Fonsi will join the Broadway company of Luis Bravo's international entertainment/dance show Forever Tango for two weeks only from 20 Aug - 01 Sep 2013).
Fonsi will be the Broadway's production third guest vocalist. The show's first guest vocalist, five-time Grammy Award-winner Gilberto Santa Rosa, will play his final performance on 28 Jul 2013, followed by the previously announced Luis Enrique.
Luis Fonsi came on the music scene in 1998 with the release of his debut album, "Comenzare" which became an instant hit on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart, making him a star in Puerto Rico and across Latin America. Fonsi's past five albums have debuted at #1 on Billboard's Top Latin Album Chart and have reached Certified Gold and Platinum Sales in the U.S. and major international markets. He is the winner of many awards including the Latin Grammy, Latin Billboard, Premios Lo Nuestro and the ASCAP Voice of Music Award.
Performing on Broadway is an honor and a challenge for any artist. I am excited to be able to join such an important show that celebrates our music and culture, in this case a genre so elegant and sentimental as the Tango. I love and respect theatre so I am truly honored to have the opportunity to take my voice to the Broadway stage.
Producer Luis Bravo said,
It's thrilling to welcome pop star Luis Fonsi into the talented company of Forever Tango. I am delighted that New York audiences will have the opportunity to experience this talented Latin vocalist live on Broadway.
As previously announced, "Dancing with the Stars" duo Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy have extended their engagement and will remain with the show through to 11 Aug 2013.
The return engagement of Forever Tango opened at the Walter Kerr Theatre, it's original Broadway home, on 14 Jul 2013, following previews from 09 Jul 2013, where it is playing a limited engagement through to 15 Sep 2013.
The show opened to mixed reviews: A half-hearted, monotonous stab at exploiting the broad appeal of tango (Record); I am no expert on tango, but I sure had a swell time (Newsroom Jersey).
Forever Tango is described in the press notes as,
Music, drama, culture, a way of life. The popularity of tango has exploded all over the world. Sensuous and sophisticated, the tango is a feeling that you dance. A story is channeled through the flick of the leg, the tug of a hand, the tap of a foot, and the arch of an eyebrow. It's passionate, yet melancholic. Tender, yet violent. You dance it with somebody, but it is so internal, you dance it by yourself. Sixteen world-class tango dancers, one vocalist and the eleven-piece Forever Tango orchestra will leave you breathless.
Created and directed by Luis Bravo, Forever Tango has been seen by millions worldwide since its inception in San Francisco in 1994, where it played for nearly two years.
Forever Tango originally opened on Broadway 1997 where it played at the Walter Kerr Theatre from 17 Jun 1997 through to 05 Apr 1998, before transferring to the Marquis Theatre where it ran from 15 Apr - 02 Aug 1998. The show was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Choreography. It returned to Broadway to play a limited four month engagement from 20 Jul - 28 Nov 2004 at the Shubert Theater.
